This reasoning also refutes the view that conception and sense consciousness have different objects, regarding whatever is inferred through action. Then, if one wonders, what is it that is experienced by recognizing again after having already seen? The seeing of sense consciousness, although its respective self-characteristics are different, the conception that arises by recognizing it as the same kind is not due to universals, but is caused by the nature of similar things, as has been explained in detail before. Second, regarding mental direct perception. The debate that mental direct perception is untenable has been presented. To this, the distinctions of the answers will be explained. First, the naked heretics say, if the previous experience of sense consciousness is grasped again, then since the previous valid cognition has already determined what is grasped, the mind is not a valid cognition, just like memory and so on. If mental direct perception grasps something else that has not been seen by sense consciousness, then since it does not rely on sense consciousness, even blind people and so on would be able to directly see objects such as forms with their minds, so mental direct perception is untenable. Second, regarding the answer. There is the answer to the first fallacy, and the answer to the second fallacy. To this, the untenable debate is refuted. First, some disciples of Dignāga (ཕྱོགས་གླང་, Chenna) say that so-called mental direct perception refers to grasping again what has already been grasped by sense consciousness, but this is not correct. Because it is not grasping what has already been grasped, there is no harm of the first fallacy. To this, the assertion that it grasps again what has already been grasped by the senses is untenable. The immediately preceding condition of mental direct perception, the object grasped by sense consciousness, is it momentary or non-momentary? If it is momentary, then since the object grasped by sense consciousness is momentary, sense consciousness itself has ceased after grasping it, so at the time of the arising of mental direct perception, the past object is not directly seen by the present mind consciousness. If there is no object to be grasped, how can it be said to be grasping again? Because it is impossible for the same moment to be grasped repeatedly by two consciousnesses, one before and one after. If the object to be grasped by mental direct perception is not momentary, then all direct perceptions would transcend the object of momentariness, and the definition of mental direct perception as a valid cognition would have to be described as having particularity, but such a thing is impossible. If the object is momentary, but has already been grasped by the mental sense faculty
