The object to be grasped by me is only that which is simultaneous. For example, like grasping a vase with the hand. If, without examination, simultaneous things are called grasping, then after careful examination, there is no relationship of mutual assistance between simultaneous things. Therefore, a wise person who understands the way of arising of cause and effect will know that the cause itself, which can establish such an appearance of cognition, is what is grasped. Because it is the producer of that which does not arise without it. Second, when the eye consciousness that grasps blue arises, although there are many causes such as the root, the resultant consciousness is the aspect that arises following which of those causes? That aspect is said to be established by the previously grasped blue object itself. It is like the image in a mirror, although there are other causes, it is established by the form. From the perspective of the fruit grasping the aspect of its own cause, that cause is called the grasped. It is like the son resembling the father's form, and in the world it is said that the son grasps the father's form, but it is not that the son's hand simultaneously grasps the father's form. Therefore, what is clearly appearing now is established as the grasped aspect. Third, for self-cognition direct perception, establish experience self-cognition free from conceptualization, and refute wrong conceptualizations about it. First, happiness and suffering, attachment and aversion, etc., are clearly and directly experienced without relying on the root, and the nature of happiness, etc., is independent of others. It is only the appearance of its own time, and it does not have the state of abiding in the time of expression. Therefore, such a nature cannot be expressed, it can only be cognized by knowledge itself. Therefore, experiencing happiness, etc., in a non-dual way, self-cognition is direct perception, and because it is not related to speech and sound, it is established as non-conceptual. Second, refute the view that happiness, etc., are internal matter and external matter. First, state the view and give the answer. First, if eye consciousness, etc., are other consciousnesses and not self-consciousness, then happiness, etc., are inanimate objects. Since they cannot be cognized by others, how can they cognize their own nature?

Although not fully understood, the experience of happiness is related and dependent because it inwardly corresponds to the self. It is to be regarded as the object or knowledge of the mind's consciousness. When the mind, which relies on the self, focuses on happiness and so on, it grasps as if the self, mind, and happiness are mixed together. In reality, happiness and so on are qualities possessed by the self within. Some, namely the Vaiśeṣika, say so regarding the self. Here, the so-called external and internal matter is not what is considered matter in our own system, which is composed of particles. Rather, it is merely that these outsiders divide consciousness into consciousness and non-consciousness, and consider non-consciousness to be matter. Second, refuting that: Happiness and so on are not other than mind, to be proven. Experiencing that, there is no other, it is self-awareness. First, establishing pervasion, stating the sign, establishing the subject-property. First, establishing pervasion: All that is a result, whether of the same kind or of a different nature, from what does it arise? It is only caused by the cause of the same kind and the actual cause of what is not that, because different causes appear different, and what is not different becomes one kind, like clay and thread being the causes of a pot and felt. Having thus established pervasion, second, stating the sign: The main mind of the senses and mind, the cause of the arising of consciousness, arises from those, and is not other, that is, it does not arise from another. The feelings that arise with the mind, such as happiness, how is it known? It is not consciousness, because it is inseparable in the nature of the result of one cause. Third: The two, sense and mind, arise from three conditions, not from a cause other than that. Here, one should avoid extreme consequences. First, if it is said that feelings such as happiness arise from the cause of consciousness, then the proof is not established, because sense consciousness arises from the actions of the self's qualities, and happiness and so on arise from the nature of the inner matter of the self's qualities, effort, and non-righteousness. This is not reasonable, because an object such as form, when it is able to establish meaning, exists together with existence, and the sense consciousness of the self-condition is free from defilements, suitable as a basis for the arising of consciousness, and free from sleep and defilements, the mind that arises possessing the nature of the object as it is, that immediately
