The earth will surely change. If one understands the cause of all suffering, then what is the cause, and what is its antidote? The mind that clings to self and considers things as "mine," which arises from a certain view of the perishable aggregate, the object of the five aggregates produced by afflictions, this clinging or attachment is the cause, and the antidote that harms it, uprooting it, is the mind that sees selflessness, because these two, object and aspect, are contradictory, like light and darkness. Then, to what does one become attached? It is to one's own aggregates. How so? Without distinguishing with wisdom the continuum and collection of the five aggregates, one clings to the idea of "I," and to the things that belong to the aggregates, one becomes attached to "my eye" and so on as "mine." Therefore, existence, encompassed by pleasure, pain, and neutrality, is exhausted by just these five aggregates. Apart from clinging to them and abiding in existence, no other agent of samsara can be found, not even a particle. If it disappears, then the complete clinging to existence will cease. If it does not disappear, then no other cause can stop samsara, because it is established by reasoning. Didn't we explain above that craving is also a cause? We did, although craving is the cause of taking birth, what will not arise without it is the clinging to self, if the clinging to self does not disappear, craving cannot be abandoned, and if it disappears, craving will not arise. Or, due to clinging to self and what is considered "mine," craving that clings to the object of the created is also a cause, as explained in the commentaries. One might think, can't self-grasping be abandoned? Its object is harmed by correct reasoning. Because for the object of the continuum and many moments of the created, merely clinging to self, but self is not established, so like clinging to a snake on a variegated rope, it is just a habit of clinging perversely, so it can be transformed. Third, even if just detachment is accomplished, one will not become omniscient merely because of detachment, if like a Hearer, Solitary Realizer, or Arhat, one merely realizes selflessness, then how can this be a proof of a valid person, the teacher, the omniscient? The path of complete pacification of all the sufferings of samsara is established by the reasoning of the power of reality, for it, the aspect of the stages of the path

Or, for the stainless wisdom that penetrates various forms of knowledge, such as the means of meditation, etc., one diligently cultivates for a long time, such as three great asamkhya kalpas. For example, if one is proficient in treatises on crafts, etc., one can gradually understand faults from coarse to subtle. Thus, for a yogi who possesses limitless means and diligently practices wisdom, extremely subtle faults such as ignorance belonging to one's own continuum, and the aspects of qualities that are the antidotes to them, will arise as extremely clear wisdom. Because those to be abandoned are destroyed by the antidotes themselves, their minds are also clearer than others, and therefore extremely superior. When abiding in the ultimate wisdom of extreme clarity, just as the orb of the sun does not allow darkness to exist, the habitual tendencies of the cause of clinging to samsara, even the most subtle, will be exhausted, thereby attaining the ultimate wisdom of liberation. The Great Sage refers to the solitary realizer who acts for the benefit of others, as well as the Shravaka Arhats, etc. The difference is that this (referring to the Great Sage) has eliminated all habitual tendencies. Thus, the cultivation of means is for the purpose of guiding sentient beings to the path. Therefore, when explaining the cause of the Sugata—the cultivation of means—here, the name of the result is established on the cause, and it is called the Sugata. Third, the conclusion: If so, the school teacher Dignāga: 'Exertion is the teacher because it guides beings.' As such, isn't it said that only those who directly explain the means of pacifying suffering to others can be called teachers? Why is it said here to be the cause of the teacher? Answer: The so-called exertion, etc., does not show direct explanation there either, but rather considers it capable of guiding. And that is also established by the name of the means of cultivation at the time of the cause. The necessity of the establishment is to show the cause that can guide sentient beings with a special name. The knowledge of this is the nature of the Sugata and Protector, which is established as the result or measure. Initially, the previous wish to benefit others and the Sugata are the cause or proof of it, and what should be established or the result is before those two.
