The so-called "fruit similarity" refers to the fruit being the fruit of sound, such as words like diligence and action. When this is set up, it is like reasons that appear to be unestablished, and criticizing faults with seemingly logical reasoning is called "fruit similarity rebuttal." It is a rebuttal because there is no need to distinguish between the differences of sound and a vase. Generally, if it is a conditioned phenomenon, impermanence will definitely be established, but if it is shown to be unestablished, it is merely a word that cannot be refuted. Therefore, if the shape is not divided into two, and merely by the shape, something is established as man-made, if it is shown to be unestablished, it will become a rebuttal. But if the shape is not distinguished as different, merely the shape itself, for man-made things, since the unmistakable relationship is not established, it is not like a fruit similarity rebuttal. Second, the sound of shape alone is an example of a non-mark. If it is, it is too extreme. First, for the different distinctions of each dharma's own kind, the generality of the sound that is established as expressive, that is, the common name, merely seeing that the object referred to exists, and thinking that it can establish other kinds, is unreasonable. For example, language and direction, etc., because it means "go," it is like saying "has horns." For these, although the sound "go" is commonly used, merely because this name is used, it will not therefore establish other names. As it is said: language, direction, land, and light, the heavens, eyes, and vajra, cow, water, etc., nine meanings, the wise should definitely understand as the sound "go." Establishing man-made things merely by the sound of shape, etc., is similar to this. Second, because it is spoken by people, it is used under the control of others, not by one's own autonomy. Sounds are not unable to be connected with anything, therefore, if merely because there is this sound, the meaning of this name can be established, then all things such as vases can establish all other needs such as cloth. For example, if a person has the name "sun," then he can also illuminate things. Second, with the reasoning that merely the sound is the same, it is impossible to establish the same meaning, it can

The Jains' arguments appear to be as follows: Because of impermanence and arising, etc., mind and happiness, etc., are not mindless things, nor are they internal things, etc. Furthermore, the idea that trees have minds because they die when their bark is peeled is also unreasonable and should be analyzed and refuted through meaning. How so? The Samkhyas say: The "intellect" that arises from the Pradhana is like a double-sided mirror. The transformations of the Pradhana, the nature of sound, etc., happiness, suffering, equanimity—these dharmas are mindless and are not the dharmas of the internal intelligent Purusha, but are external dharmas, because these are impermanent and arising things. Their intention is that saying intellect and happiness, etc., are impermanent and arising things is established in the view of both internal and external parties. If this reason is established, then it can also establish mindless things, they think. How does it establish mindless things? They themselves think that the meaning of impermanence is merely that it arises from the external Pradhana and then dissolves back into it, and they do not think that something that did not exist before will newly arise, or that something that existed before will permanently cease. If that is the case, then impermanence is established, and the meaning of impermanence and arising, according to their own intention, can be established, they think. Since that is the case, that kind of impermanence according to their own intention is not established on intellect, etc., in the view of the inner Buddhists. The meaning of impermanence as spoken by the Buddhists is not established in their own view. Therefore, it is impossible for this reason to be established in the common perception of both opponents, and merely establishing the sound does not establish any intended meaning. Even if it is established in the view of the Buddhists that intellect, etc., will eventually cease, this does not establish mindless things. Furthermore, the Jains say: Trees are sentient, because they die when their bark is peeled. When stated in front of the Buddhists, the Buddhists also admit that the term death can be applied to trees. If this is admitted, then it can also establish sentience, they think. However, the Buddhists think that death refers to the cessation of the three: the root consciousness, life force, which exist in a similar continuum, but this meaning is not established in trees. Although there are sayings such as "the tree died" when a tree dries up, and "the milk died" when milk spoils, this does not establish that trees are sentient.
