It distinguishes and discerns. For example, seeing something with branches, etc., and something without, discernment distinguishes between this and not this. This can be either directly seen or, although not directly seen, it appears in the realm of discernment, can be mixed with sound, and if it is not distinguished as different from something else that is not in agreement, then it is unreasonable to apply a sign with a meaning of definite grasping to it. Merely appearing in the realm of discernment eliminates others, and thus the thought of applying a sign to it arises. For example, for the thought that grasps the generality of a tree, the very thing that appears or exists appears as the cause of the thought that grasps that tree, and what is not the cause of that thought is separate from the nature of not being a tree. And that, too, clings to appearance and discernment as being of the same nature, and in the manner of possessing three natures, the one who applies the sign himself, in order to be able to know that the meaning that exists in the realm of discernment is different from others that are not it, applies the sound or language or sign of "tree" to that which is different from what does not have branches, etc., and which exists in the realm of discernment, clinging to appearance and discernment as one. The necessity is that once that sign has been applied, later, when expressing or acting, the thought will arise that understands such a meaning that is different from others from that sound. How does it arise? When the realm of appearance of discernment arises from that sound, discernment itself, due to delusion, arrives at the meaning in the manner of understanding appearance and discernment as the same thing. Therefore, the meaning in the realm of discernment appears as different from others, and by naming a sign that distinguishes that, one is able to understand that it is different from others, just like the sun. Therefore, the word "tree" is not intended to understand only one part that distinguishes place, time, and form, but rather it is a name given to understand only the thing that has branches, etc., by cutting off others that do not have branches, etc. Therefore, by naming one, one is able to understand all similar kinds. Similarly, one should also understand all those that express kinds, such as humans and heavens. If a name is given only to one person, it is the intention of naming it so as not to confuse it with any other person, and because of that intention, knowing that name, one cannot compare it to others and apply it, so it is seen.

Therefore, not combining in that way is only due to fame, and there is no other reason. If one combines in an arbitrary way and clings to it in that way, then no matter what name is given to that arbitrary or other dharma, one will cling to that name as being only the name of that thing. For example, calling an elephant "one with a hand" and a cow "one with movement," there is no reason to say that it is only their name. Therefore, one should know that terms are combined arbitrarily, and that the term makes one understand the meaning of the arbitrary, which is based on the exclusion of others and is dominated by conceptual thought. Refuting the second argument: It is not universally true that all sounds have exclusion as their object, because the sound of a pot, etc., can exclude other things that are not pots, but for the sound of knowable things, etc., there is no other thing that can be excluded. Even if one measures non-knowable things, that also becomes knowable itself. Therefore, since the other is not established, it is impossible to exclude it. Therefore, not all sounds are established as having a distinctive object. If someone thinks like that, then in order to turn the listener's mind away from some non-expressible meanings and enter into some meanings of the object of entry, sound is strongly combined. Because the meaning of the object of entry of the sound itself is determined by the way of excluding other possessors. Otherwise, if there is no determination by the way of entering and turning away, then combining sound will become meaningless. For example, just like saying "pour water into a bottle," if the verb "give" does not exclude other actions such as taking, then there is no need to mention it. Moreover, since it is qualified as "water," it excludes other things such as milk. As for where to take the water from, in order to exclude taking it with hands, etc., it is said "in the bottle." If there is no such determination separately, then there is no need to mention these three. Similarly, all languages also have the ability to exclude their respective opposites. Therefore, the sounds of knowable things, etc., when placing words such as measurable, expressible, and all, etc., in the terms of negation and affirmation, will exclude some doubts about non-knowable things, etc. If there is no such thing, then combining sound is meaningless. For example, someone doubts that because non-things do not exist, knowledge does not enter into them. When saying "non-things are knowable," it excludes non-knowable things, as well as the occasion
