It is merely called certainty and uncertainty. If direct perception itself has certainty, then no one would be mistaken. Therefore, even the direct experience that is the cause of certainty can induce certainty if there are favorable conditions. If there are no favorable conditions or if there are unfavorable conditions that lead to confusion, then merely seeing cannot induce certainty, just like thinking that sound is permanent. What are the favorable conditions? Inner clarity of mind, habit, appropriate timing, focusing on the meaning, the force of the meaning, and so on, are the complete causes for inducing certainty. Among these, clarity of mind refers to the clarity of mind of yogis, who can determine things in an instant just by seeing them. If one is accustomed to the object to be determined, one can easily induce certainty simply by trusting what one sees. For example, inner habit is like how ordinary people feel disgusted by the corpse of a woman, those with desire want to have sex with it, and dogs want to eat it. Just as those who have a dominant habit will perceive things in that way, so the habit of attending to things in accordance with their form, or the imprint of that habit, is also a condition. Appropriate timing refers to, for example, when the topic of conversation is medicine, seeing a doctor, even if that person has other qualities, one will be certain that he is a doctor. Similarly, one can induce certainty about something that one is specifically pursuing and focusing on. For example, among many people, if one is specifically focused on whether a certain person is present or not, one can be certain that he is present simply by seeing him, even if others are also appearing in front of one, one cannot be certain whether they are present or not. The force of the meaning refers to, for example, among various kinds of spectacles, being particularly certain about those that are strange, close, and clearly visible, and so on. If there are many certainties, and the causes mentioned above are present, then what is the order in which they arise? The cause of certainty that is closest arises first, and similarly, the result of the cause that is strongest at that time will arise first. For example, if a person comes who is both a father and a Khenpo (abbot), although there is no difference between the fact that this person is both the one who gave birth to oneself and the one who teaches oneself to read, when he comes, one will first think, "My father is coming," and not think, "The Khenpo is coming."
