That is, the teachings, and in addition, the manner in which the lineage is liberated by means of wrathful forms for sentient beings with evil natures who are extremely difficult to subdue. Third, regarding the meaning of the tantra to be fully understood: Generally teaching the nature of the three tantras, and specifically explaining the path tantra, are two. The first has three parts: the base, the path, and the result. First, regarding the base or causal tantra to be realized: Teaching the mandala of the base's own nature, how one is confused by not realizing it, how one does not stray from one's own nature even when confused, and how confusion is reversed, are the four things to be understood. First: As it is said, "Without bondage, without liberation, the Buddha's Dharma is spontaneously perfect from the beginning." Thus, all phenomena included in existence and samsara are pure from the beginning as the mandala of body, speech, and mind. Since they are free from all characteristics, they are enlightened in great equanimity without being separated into individual categories. This is called the spontaneously established mandala of the base's own nature, as was taught in the context of the introduction. No one can bind such an essence, and since there is no bondage, there is no liberation either. Since it is free from all dualistic phenomena, it is without limitation or bias, and abides in the nature of the indivisibility of the two truths. This is called the base of the essence of reality. Realizing it as it is becomes nirvana, and not realizing it becomes the basis of samsara. Since all phenomena of samsara and nirvana are not other than its own nature, it is called the base. Since it continuously exists without changing its nature from sentient beings to Buddhas, it is called the continuum. By the power of the base's purity becoming manifest, it appears as the ultimate body and wisdom of the result. Therefore, depending on the way it appears, it is also called the causal continuum. That very base, from the aspect of emptiness, is taught in the Prajnaparamita Sutra and others by names such as the Dharmadhatu, the ultimate limit, and Suchness. From the aspect of the appearance of body and wisdom, it is taught in the Tathagatagarbha Sutra and others by the name Tathagatagarbha. In this definitive meaning of the mantra vehicle, the nature of the great purity and equality that is the indivisibility of appearance and emptiness is called the primordial mandala of the base. How is that?

When realized in this way, one becomes inseparable from the suchness of reality, hence the name Tathagata. Because of the expansion of true wisdom regarding the ultimate meaning of reality, one is called Buddha. One who realizes in this way is called a practitioner. Secondly, this very basis, when not realized as it is, is defiled by sudden confusion, appearing as inverted and clinging to it, is also called the basis of imputed confusion. It is also called the impure and confused appearance. That is, the primordial ground is pure from the beginning in essence, but because of the key point that the self-existing appearance of nature is inseparable from union, if one realizes the state as it is, one becomes a Buddha, and if one does not realize it, one can become a sentient being. For example, if the mind is not generally the nature of perceiving objects, then confusion is not possible, and it is also impossible to realize the meaning of non-confusion. However, since the mind is in a state of grasping objects, it grasps the nature of the object as it is, such as grasping a rope as a rope, and grasping it upside down due to accidental errors, such as grasping a rope as a snake, both are possible. Thus, because the clarity of primordial awareness is not interrupted, the seed of the confusion of grasping and clinging to the self-appearance of spontaneous accomplishment as an object, when the appearance arising from this spreads widely, it is like water turning into pure ice. In this way, no matter what appears, clinging to the ordinary appearance of grasping and clinging, the meaning of great purity and equality does not appear. Moreover, the mind that focuses on inversion is also inconsistent with the principle of wisdom, so the meaning of the self-existing basis is obscured, and only the appearance of confusion appears. Thus, if one elaborates on how this confusion obscures reality, it is limitless. However, in short, there are four obscurations of states. When awake, the consciousness of the six aggregates wanders in the objects, grasping various ordinary appearances in a rough and clear manner, thus obscuring the pure appearance, the illusory net, and the nature of the manifested body. In dreams, various appearances of wind and mind only appear vaguely in self-appearance, and clinging to them obscures the self-appearance of wisdom and the nature of the enjoyment body. In deep sleep, the movement of mind and mental factors stops, and one is in a state of darkness like unconsciousness.
