Pacifying the disturbance of dullness and agitation is the sixth step. After becoming calm in this way, like clear water without the faults of dullness and agitation, it should not be stirred, but kept still. Like a person resting, one should remain aware in a state of equanimity. When the state of slightly pacifying discursive thoughts is enhanced, because discursive thoughts are able to expand, the afflictions that are close by will also, like muddy water gradually clearing, avoid distraction in a way that approaches tranquility, this is the seventh step. When the faults of distraction are stretched out, at the time of both tranquility and near tranquility, the habitual experience is called like a river. Just as a slow-flowing river looks still from a distance, but from nearby, it flows continuously. Similarly, although it seems that the mind is abiding, if you look closely, you will find many subtle fluctuations. At that time, it is important to continuously improve through diligence. From abiding onwards, up to here, due to the interruption of dullness and agitation, it is necessary to re-enter the focused object, therefore, it is very important to subdue appropriately with these three: awareness, mind, and equanimity. Through the power of generating diligence, being more excellent than before, if effort is not abandoned, thoughts will not be able to interrupt, and the mind will abide one-pointedly on the object, this is called with effort or one-pointedness, this is the eighth step. This is called a stable experience like a calm, waveless ocean. If one abides on the object and is accompanied by effort, then this is the stage of entering the focused object without interruption, and at this time, it is important to remain in a state of equanimity towards the object. From the stage of with effort, continuously improving, thereby obtaining samadhi that enters naturally without needing effort, this is the last of the nine stages of mind abiding, and is also called one-pointedness of desire. This is obtained through the power of habituation and complete familiarity with all the previous stages. The ultimate experience of being unmoving like a mountain begins to arise from here. If such a one-pointed mind of desire is accomplished, then the mind will effortlessly merge into the focused object, and will naturally abide in all activities. If one does not think of anything, but remains in a natural state, then phenomena will cease, and a feeling will arise like the mind merging with the sky. After that,

The body is like a sudden occurrence, and in the subsequent stages (of practice), the strength of attachment, aversion, etc., is weak and not continuous. When clarity diminishes, one might feel that even the minute particles of pillars, etc., can be counted, and various kinds of bliss, clarity, and non-thought arise. Sleep is also like being mixed with samadhi, and dreams are mostly pure. However, such samadhi must also be practiced as the basis for the common path of inner and outer, which has the aspect of truth or the aspect of peace and roughness. If it is not yet mastered by pliancy, it is not even a samadhi with the characteristics of calm abiding, let alone vipassana. Therefore, bliss, clarity, and non-thought also have two situations: whether they are the experience of meditative equipoise on that very nature or not. Do not regard a fleeting experience of the mind abiding as a profound path, but you must be skilled in the key points of the path. Like this, becoming accustomed to the one-pointed mind, making body and mind serviceable, is called pliancy. The mind, like a very tame and independent horse, can be used as desired for virtuous objects. Being completely free from unpleasant states such as anxiety, one feels happiness. Because of its power, the serviceable winds flow through the body, freeing the body from unpleasant states such as heaviness that cannot be used. The vertebrae are like the stacked tops of golden pillars, and the body is as light as cotton petals. Like a stream of warm milk spreading throughout the body at once, in a state of bliss, one can use it as desired for virtue, this is physical pliancy. Such pliancy also arises gradually, first coarse and then subtle. The coarse also starts from the subtle and eventually manifests completely and clearly. Because the coarse agitates the mind, its strength gradually diminishes. A subtle pliancy, as thin as a shadow, unmoving, arises in accordance with samadhi. This is called calm abiding. In this way, whether one practices the generation stage or the completion stage, it will become measured. These methods are an extensive presentation of the practice of samadhi. In short, abide in the object with joy in samadhi. Generate that effort continuously. Maintain mindfulness continuously. Abandon sinking and excitement with awareness. When there is no fault, remain in equanimity, that is, joy, effort, mindfulness, and aware
