Since the nine methods of abiding must be practiced sequentially, the four types of attention are: the attention of engaging with diligence, the attention of engaging intermittently, the attention of engaging without interruption, and the attention of engaging without effort. The nine methods of abiding the mind are: abiding, continuous abiding, returning abiding, close abiding, taming, pacifying, close pacifying, equanimity with effort, and equanimity. Regarding these, the sutra says: "Causes to abide, causes to abide correctly, causes to gather and abide, causes to abide closely, causes to tame, causes to pacify, causes to pacify closely, causes to become one continuum, causes to become samadhi." That is to say, abiding through hearing, continuous abiding through thinking, returning abiding and close abiding through mindfulness, taming and pacifying through awareness, complete pacifying and one-pointedness through diligence, and accomplishing equanimity through complete familiarity. Regarding this, in the stage of the first two minds, it is the first attention, from then until the seventh is the second, the eighth is the third, and the ninth is the fourth attention. These nine stages, wavering like water flowing down a steep cliff, attainment like water in a narrow hole, habituation like a river, stability like a waveless ocean, and the experience of completion like a mountain king, are traversed in the manner of five experiences. Now, I will explain the key to practicing these methods in accordance with the essential points: By the power of hearing the faults of not attaining samadhi and the merits of attaining samadhi, as well as the methods of abiding the mind, generate faith and aspiration, and with extremely diligent effort, abandon laziness and so on, and abide in the meaning of the generation stage and completion stage, whatever the object of focus may be, this is the first method. At that time, without stopping for even a moment, like lightning, repeatedly generate joyful effort and practice repeatedly. By the power of thinking about the meaning of hearing the key to samadhi, make every effort to continuously abide on the previous object, this is the second. During these first two methods, although it is difficult to continuously abide, one should abide in that continuity with diligent and diligent attention. When the mind wavers like a shooting star and is distracted from the continuity of the previous object, like channeling violent water into a channel, one should use mindfulness to return to one's own position and abide, this is the third. This first method of abiding

During the stage of increase, it is like paper carried by the wind or swaying like water on a cliff. Because it is difficult to find an opportunity for strong thoughts to arise, one should strive without discouragement, like building a dam in a rapid stream. That wild horse of the mind, which is extremely difficult to tame. Tightly bind it with the rope of mindfulness and place it in the enclosure of relaxed equanimity. Cherish guiding it with the reins of effort! When mindfulness is slightly stronger than before, and the object itself is present in a vague way before the mind, just as the mind begins to stabilize slightly. Gathering inward in a one-pointed manner and focusing solely on the object is the fourth stage. At this time, just as a hawk circles in the sky looking for prey, it does not abandon the prey to go elsewhere. Even if it lands on the prey, it cannot stay, but flies around the prey, so the mind slightly circles around the object, so it is only important to maintain the continuity of mindfulness. Then, naturally, a little joy arises towards that samadhi, just as a bee does not stay in one place for a long time, but quickly moves and sucks nectar, when fondness arises for abiding. The unbearable agitation of thoughts like before is slightly subdued, this is the fifth stage. These two stages, close abiding and taming, are slightly easier to abide in than the initial stages. It is called the experience of attainment, that is, the first stage of beginning to generate samadhi, or slightly gaining warmth. Like water in a cave, many subtle thoughts rush and swirl continuously. Even so, it is likened to the water in a cave being slightly slower than the water on a cliff. During this stage of taming, just as a bee is put in a bottle, it has no power to go elsewhere until it is released, but just as it does not stay in the bottle but keeps moving, when the mind is placed on the object. The object does not disappear from consciousness, but the agitation of thoughts does not cease, and at that time, it is precious to abide in that state of the object without being moved. When abiding there with awareness in that way, if sinking and excitement occur, thinking in order to eliminate them. Through properly applying the respective antidotes, the various thoughts that become obstacles naturally
