Subduing the four maras, namely the skandha mara, klesha mara, death mara, and devaputra mara, is like wielding a vajra. This place is also the renowned abode of Vajrasattva, being the true representative or incarnation of Vajrasattva, and the emanation body of Vajrasattva. This is the necessity of relying on a Vajra Master. Although it is difficult to find a master who possesses all these qualities, as it is said in the Glorious Ultimate Meaning: "In times of strife, the master's faults and virtues are mixed. In all circumstances, it is impossible to be without fault. If virtues are more abundant, one should also carefully consider. Children should rely on him." Therefore, one should take as a master those who have more virtues than faults. It is important for all who enter the path to examine the master thoroughly before relying on him. Relying on a good master is like the root of the path, so one should rely on him with joy, as one would treat one's children and spouse. If one relies on a master who does not possess the qualifications, he will teach the path in a reversed manner and throw you into hell and other places, causing many misfortunes in this life and the next. Therefore, it is important to examine the master who is qualified to receive initiation and instruction. Next, the qualities of the master who should be avoided are described: Any malicious master who is arrogant due to his own merits, and is extremely haughty and conceited, should be avoided. Any arrogance that arises from being learned, wealthy, powerful, beautiful, and the ten things, etc., or from being proficient in the activities of mantra and the path, etc., is one of the greatest faults that tarnish one's own merits. Therefore, one should not be complacent by looking at those who are inferior to oneself, but should think of those who are superior to oneself, thereby pacifying arrogance. The Buddha said that those who are arrogant and lack compassion should be abandoned by the ignorant. Similarly, those whose minds are overwhelmed by anger, and those who openly violate secret vows, to the extent that worldly people slander the Dharma and practitioners, and those who commit faults such as revealing secrets, violating the vows spoken of in mantra, and those who misappropriate heavy objects such as the property of the Sangha and stupas.

Using the guru's possessions, greedily clinging to and accumulating the wealth of retinue and enjoyment, being separated from the essential instructions of the holy path, and not having heard good scriptures, is truly ignorant! Those disciples who have become holy ones are intent on deceiving, deceiving with untrue lies. "Mind weary from the place of supreme bliss" means that practitioners, on the path of skillful means, do not possess the unpolluted bliss and only seek external sensual pleasures, or on the path of liberation, they do not possess the realization of unpolluted supreme bliss and mainly focus on the realm of conceptual thoughts. "Not empowered" means explaining the tantra without empowerment. Always being attached to the external enjoyments of samsara, constantly drinking alcohol, etc., being separated from constant samadhi, being unrestrained, speaking harsh words, hurting others, and for the sake of sensual pleasures, being mostly attached to the desire for the pleasure of union, that person is like an undesirable hell, and wise disciples should completely abandon relying on such a wicked guru for the cause of perfect enlightenment. Here, the commentary says that the rules of mantra are like this: The guru's qualities should be taken, and faults should never be taken. Taking qualities leads to accomplishment, and speaking of faults leads to no accomplishment. And, "Whoever has received the supreme empowerment of Vajra, the guru is the Tathagata. All beings in the ten directions, the Buddhas of the three times come and prostrate to him." Didn't the Tathagata say that himself? Therefore, one should not examine whether the guru has faults or not, but only take his qualities, rely on the guru, and follow his teachings. Those ignorant people of the future who do not understand or have lost the way of relying on the guru will say such things, but that is not the case. The Tathagata said that one must first thoroughly examine the guru: "Without compassion and wrathful, arrogant, greedy, and untamed, the wise should abandon the self-praising guru." Therefore, even if one has relied on a guru, it will become an obstacle to the path of liberation.

Wherever one goes, one must avoid actions that cause downfalls such as lack of faith. Similarly, in the "First Buddha," it says: "If a monastic who is a householder uses the dwelling place of the Sangha, the servants, farmers, and merchants of kings, etc., and the ignorant who sell the sacred Dharma, they are not Vajradharas on earth." And so on. And regarding the examination of the three teachers to be relied upon, it is said: "Knowing completely these ten realities, among the three, the bhikshu is the best, the intermediate is called a novice, and the householder is the worst." As the ten realities of mantra will be explained, the teacher who knows the reality is also the best bhikshu due to the basis, and so on. Furthermore, a householder who has not attained the bhumis should not be made a guru by the king, because he has complete knowledge of hearing, whatever actions are done by a person with signs. A teacher who has not attained the bhumis, whenever a householder makes offerings, at that time there will be disrespect towards the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. And the consecration of temples, etc., should always be done by those with signs. If there are three in one place, it should not be done by a householder wearing white clothes. And so on. Thus, the examination of teachers is taught in various ways in order to abandon those with faults. The meaning spoken here is that, in general, it is unnecessary to mention that those who possess wisdom are principal and supreme by nature. Compared to the mere Sutra path, it is unnecessary to mention that those who possess the view and conduct of mantra are particularly superior. However, holding the banner of the maroon sign is extremely beneficial to the eyes of the Tathagata's teachings, and since renunciants who have abandoned the conduct of householders are the foundation of the Buddha's teachings, it is said that the sign of renunciation must be given primary importance due to the special need to keep the precious teachings of the Tathagata alive in this world. In the future, barbarians will like the white clothes of householders and hate red, and Buddhists will be those who hold the red and yellow signs. If renunciants are not mainly regarded as objects of offerings by kings, etc., then there will be no respect for the Buddha, etc., and a worldly custom will gradually arise, thereby harming the tradition of the teachings in general. Therefore, one should be a guru to the king, and the monastic...
