Merely speaking of it as being similar to emptiness will never lead to the meaning of equality, which is the pacification of the elaboration of grasping and being grasped. Therefore, mere emptiness that has not transcended the realm of duality is not the all-pervading Vajrasattva. Vajrasattva is the very nature of great equality, which is the indivisibility of appearance and emptiness, and is without distinctions. Within that state, all phenomena encompassed by dualistic appearances become of equal taste. Although they appear as two, it is impossible to transcend the nature of reality, which is non-dual. Its nature transcends the extremes of permanence and impermanence, existence and non-existence, and is the Dharmata Svabhavikakaya. Although there is no duality of pervader and pervaded in it, from the perspective that all phenomena of the three times have not deviated from its state, it is the pervader. Because its own state never changes, it is the great constant. Because it does not abide in the extremes of conditioned and unconditioned, it is the great unconditioned, and so forth. The Buddhas have taught the ultimate suchness using these terms. Due to such a meaning, in the great commentary on the equality of taste, which is the mixing of emptiness and wisdom, it says: "Here, the relationship of what is to be pervaded and what pervades in the body, which is definitely established by convention, is the consciousness in the bodies of all sentient beings." Here, it is said that Vajrasattva proceeds as the pervader in the three existences. If this is done from the perspective of the non-dual nature of reality, the relationship of pervader and pervaded cannot be established. However, if everything is completely pure in its essence, then from the perspective of convention, consciousness abides in the bodies of all sentient beings. And the nature of that consciousness, from the beginning, abides in the nature of self-luminous purity, which is the reason why it must be said to be the all-pervading lord. Furthermore, in the continuation of the previous commentary, it says: "That itself is emptiness, and through the power of meditating on the form of emptiness, the mind that grasps, mixed with the appearance of the mind that is to be grasped, becomes of equal taste, and also becomes the unchanging constant. Here, the word constant refers to that which is without obscuration." If there is consciousness, like the moisture of water and the heat of fire, its nature

Although the wisdom of self-luminous clarity exists inseparably, it does not manifest because of obscurations. In order to dispel those obscurations, the form of emptiness, such as smoke, the emptiness possessing all supreme aspects that appear manifestly, is to be apprehended by the mind. Through the power of habituation, the mind that grasps it becomes pliable, and this becomes the supreme wisdom of equanimity, without grasping and being grasped, unchanging and constant. The meaning of constant is that it is free from the obscuration of change; if it is free from the obscuration of change, then it never wavers from that immovable, constant state. Thus, in the first chapter of the condensed version of the Great Commentary, it says: "Just as fire constantly dwells in wood, but cannot be seen by cutting and dividing, by rubbing wood, rubbing the tinder, and rubbing with the hand, those dwelling within it will become visible. Similarly, the mind's clear light is not seen by the methods of conceptual meditation, but it is seen by mixing it with impure substances and joining them as one." It also says: "Signs such as smoke, and vital efforts, descending into the central channel, the conduct of the vidyā, the vajra not falling, likewise semen rising upwards. Through these paths, the unchanging great bliss of the Buddhas, called messengers or all female messengers, is attained by the co-emergent yogi." As it is said, the nature of mind, the self-luminous nature, although not newly attained through the power of the path, it is manifested through the power of the path. Therefore, all sentient beings are pervaded by the wisdom of the self-luminous nature of the wheel of the ground-state, but because it is obscured by obscurations, it is not seen, and for those who do not believe, it is introduced to understanding through the door of showing empty forms such as smoke, so that they may generate manifest faith. Thus, the five elements and consciousness abide, and because the essence is not stained by the obscurations of affliction, the nature of self-purification is peaceful. Because of its power, it is free from all the pains of change, so the great bliss Vajrasattva pervades and abides in the three realms of desire, form, and formlessness in the manner of the nature of reality, and the yogi with his own body
