At that time, the mind of the Śrāvaka abandoned the pearl and it was placed upon the Buddha’s two shoulders. One boy, with the mind of omniscience, abandoned the pearl seed, and within the Buddha’s ushnīsha, saw the palace built of pearls, which appeared as suffering, yet within it the Buddha’s body was present. Then the Thus-Gone One smiled, and proclaimed: during the time of the Buddha, the other two boys will become the supreme pair of Buddhas. Now, they are the Blessed One himself, together with the sons of Śāriputra and Maudgalyāyana. Thus it was spoken. Hence it is taught that these are the very first origins of generating bodhicitta. Moreover, in other sūtras, before many Buddhas, again and again bodhicitta was aroused in great numbers, just so. Regarding the initial arousal of bodhicitta, as stated in the Ornament of the Sūtras: the gross sign arising through conventional designation is the conventional bodhicitta; the subtle sign obtained through suchness is the ultimate bodhicitta. Of these two, the first is the cause of arising: the power of companions, the power of conditions, the power of roots, the power of hearing, the power of habituating virtue, arising from impermanence and permanence, and arousing the mind as taught by others. As explained, the arousal of bodhicitta before the Buddha’s supreme banner was born from the power of companions; this was the bodhisattva Mañjuśrī as a youth, also called Dharma-speaker, King of Wisdom, who by skillful means guided to arouse bodhicitta before the Thus-Gone One, thereby generating bodhicitta and accumulating roots of virtue. Again, one boy, having beheld the brilliance of all Buddhas, offered the pearl seed and made aspiration prayers to become like that Buddha. With heartfelt compassion toward a Dharma-friend who had become a chariot-drawn to hell, he gave rise to compassion and loving-kindness through his own inner force; this was born from the strength of his lineage. Among the three boys, the one who aspired toward the vast and made the aspiration to become Buddha was the Blessed One himself; the one who aspired to become the supreme pair were the sons of Śāriputra and Maudgalyāyana. Furthermore, the compassion that arose for a friend—according to the Ornament of the Sūtras—its root lies in the heart of compassion.

The Master declared: Always cultivate the mind to benefit sentient beings. According to this teaching, the root of generating bodhicitta lies in developing compassion and loving-kindness toward all beings. For compassion that arises through the power of the Great Vehicle is the true origin of bodhicitta. King Radiant (Öd-ldan) made the supreme vow of enlightenment, relying on the power of hearing the Dharma. The tamer once said: I can subdue the body of a great elephant, but I cannot subdue the defilements of my mind; only one who can tame the mind is called Buddha, the Blessed One. Upon hearing this praise of the Buddha, the king engaged in generosity and other virtues, and made the aspiration to become a Buddha. The high priest Vast Light made offerings to the Thus-Gone One, Śākyamuni, and aspired to Buddhahood. This was due to the strength of virtuous roots and the power of past accumulated merit, having encountered the Buddha appearing in the world, and thus accumulating merit and making aspirations. The Brahmin Ocean-Dust (Gyatso'i Rdul) made five hundred aspirations and gave rise to bodhicitta. This arose because, in that and previous lives, he had cultivated the virtue gathered by Mahāyāna teachings, and with great compassion embraced the impure world, thereby bringing forth the initial bodhicitta. In general, generating bodhicitta does not necessarily require the full presence of all five causes; even one cause is sufficient for its arising. If bodhicitta arises from any of the five causes, though initially small, it can grow steadily, becoming stable and firm, enduring without decline throughout all lifetimes. Therefore, beings possessing the potential of the Great Vehicle, though endowed with causal power, must still rely on conditions; thus the initial arising of bodhicitta occurred in sequence among figures such as: the Merchant’s Son, the Boy, Gatikta, King Radiant, the High Priest Vast Light, and the Brahmin Ocean-Dust.
