He said, "Come back." Not long after, a Brahmin named Mongtun came out of that city, grabbed the hem of the physician's robe and said, "You promised to give me a can of barley, give it to me now and then leave." The great physician there spoke in verse: Kings do not become friends, Chandalas have no relatives, Do not tell secrets to women, Do not eat peacock meat. The Brahmin Mongtun, Not even a can of barley will be given. After saying that, he left. The executioners said, "Great physician, if you are knowledgeable, what is the use of it?" The great physician said, "I am not useless, but you do not understand the meaning of what I said." After saying that, those people left and said to the king, "Please repeat what the great physician said." The king asked the great physician, "Are you afraid of being killed that you said those words?" The great physician said, "God, I am not useless, but I spoke of my needs because of suffering." "What is it?" He said, "I said 'Kings do not become friends' because in the past the gods had no villages or cities, only food and clothing. Now you possess land, kingship, armies, wealth, and soldiers, if I did these things, you would not remember my previous merits, but instead let me be killed by the gods, thinking of these things, that is why I said that." "Chandalas have no relatives" because this Chandala without clothes and beds, if the king gives me living supplies, he will come to offer me, but the god did not accept him. I thought, "I am both poor and wandering," so I made a distribution, so now I can be at peace. If he comes happily to kill me, that is why I said that. "Do not tell secrets to women" because you, the king, once sat in court and said, "To whom should secrets be told and to whom should one pour out one's heart?" The ministers said, "To parents, sisters, and mongooses." You, the king, said, "Wives are the body..."

Because this is one half, it should therefore be spoken of. Then I thought: I will present this matter before the deity. So I hid the king’s parrot and had another parrot devoured. And taking ornaments from a slaughtered great cow, I adorned a southern merchant woman and placed her in a house, then invited the deity to observe. Thereafter, when the king looked upon that southern merchant woman, he saw that she and the parrot were in no way different in color or marks; and the king’s parrot appeared truly before him, so he concluded that the great physician was faultless. The Brahmin Mong Rdul-tulpo said: ‘Do not become attached to any cloth.’ The reason he said this was because, when I was sent to execution by the king, the messengers of Yama escorted me, and I seized the hem of a garment to cling to, so I uttered that statement. Then, since the matter was entirely confirmed, they rejoiced, released me, and honored me greatly. Thereafter, the great physician bowed to the king and said: ‘O King, do you observe the secrets of women? Does your daughter indeed require me? Yet, in lineage, form, manners, and wisdom, only one is equal to me, and she should be taken as wife.’ Having said this, I transformed myself into the likeness of a Brahmin, holding in my right hand a bird-egg vessel as a beautiful ornament for offering the body; clad in the hide of a mountain beast as garment; painting three designs upon my face, I disguised myself as a forest Brahmin in search of a girl. On the way, in a village, a Brahmin came and asked: ‘Where are you going?’ I replied: ‘I come from above and go to the Brahmin’s forest abode.’ He asked: ‘Do you have any acquaintances or household members there?’ I answered: ‘None.’ Thus that Brahmin brought me into his home and hosted me accordingly. Later, his junior wife became attached to another man, so the next day when I asked the road, she told me. That household Brahmin then asked: ‘When you come and go to my house, is it just like your own house?’ I said: ‘Exactly so.’ And then I departed. Thereafter, on the road there was a field, and there was a maiden of fine appearance, fair form, and of noble quietude.

He saw a beautiful woman and became attached, asking her: “Good lady, who are you, and what is your name?” She replied: “My name is Saga (Sa-ga), I am the cultivator of the entire village fields.” The great physician thought: “This woman has fine appearance; let me test her intelligence.” He entered a village, raised his hand high, and with his foot stirred the soil. Saga then said: “Teacher, just as you raised your hand, so too should you raise your foot.” The physician laughed and said: “You are truly clever! Your ear-ornament is like a round ring, very bright. Saga, why is that so?” She answered: “To cover both my ears.” The physician said: “Girl, your form is graceful and beautiful.” She replied: “It is due to the kindness of the village masters.” After a short while, he asked: “From where did you come?” She replied: “From a single path, but I had to make it two, because thorny branches blocked the way.” Again he asked: “Why have you come?” She replied: “From the field, to fetch back seeds.” The physician asked again: “Girl, will you be my wife?” She said: “If the masters of the village consent.” The physician asked further: “Show me, in the forest full of trees, which road is flat, easy, and without incline.” She pointed out a crooked path. Yet she herself ran ahead by another way, and entered a herdsboy’s tent, where she loosened part of her garment, closed one eye, and laughed secretly with him. But she also said: “With whomever you eat, with them you should go; with whomever you do not eat, you should abandon them and go into another’s grain field.” The great physician then went along the road she had shown. From a far distance he recognized her and said: “If a garment has no fastening cord, do not tie it at the waist; if it has no belt, do not wear it. O beautiful, fine-eyed lady, tell me: from where do you go to the Flower Village?” She smiled slightly and said: “Here, on the left-hand path, there is a place where the flowers of Bala-sha bloom profusely.” Then the physician asked a Brahmin to go. He went on, and after asking, came to Saga’s house, but did not see her parents. Then the villagers said: “This Saga, if you allow, shall belong to me…”
