Those bound by obscurations of evil destinies do not know the path to purity. Then the great Brahmin, understanding the meaning of purity as he himself expressed, thought: Householders, even while living at home, so long as they live, may practice purity, completing full perfection, utterly free from defilement, yet this practice is not easy. Therefore, I shall shave off my hair and beard, smear myself with ashes, and with single-pointed true faith, leave the household life and go forth as a renunciant. Having conceived this thought, he said: “In order to be born in purity, one must strive firmly in this. This Dharma is pure and everlasting.” Having spoken, his countenance changed. After the fourth month of summer had passed, King Dust-Mote went before that Brahmin, paid homage at his feet, and sat apart. The Brahmin said: “I am no longer pleased; may the king himself maintain governance.” The king replied: “Whatever unfulfilled desire you have, I shall satisfy. If any would harm you, I would not abandon you but kill them.” The Brahmin answered: “O king, I have no unsatisfied desire, nor is there any harm against me. But having heard the words of renunciation, I no longer delight in household affairs.” Thus, in verses they exchanged, the Brahmin declared through words of purity his wish to renounce. The king said: “Wherever you go, I too will go. You are my teacher, and I shall become your śrāvaka disciple.” Thus abandoning his desire for the king, he cultivated purity, seeking to be born in purity. Then the great Brahmin asked the six royal lineages: “If I renounce, what will you do?” They answered: “We will delay seven years, entrusting our wives and children to governance, and then follow you into renunciation.” The Brahmin said: “Seven years is too long; desires will bind, pleasures will intoxicate, and the killing of life is difficult to abandon. After seven years, one may or may not renounce, it is uncertain. Therefore I shall renounce now.” Thus they resolved upon a period between six years and one year, or between seven months and seven days. The Brahmin said: “Seven days is already too long.”

Though it is true that worldly people cannot avoid the delights of desire, such enjoyment is but intoxication, and since life is fragile and hard to sustain, even after seven days one cannot firmly decide whether to renounce or not. Yet, surely, one day I will renounce. Thus, seven brahmins such as Shing Sāla, together with five hundred sons of brahmins and all those practicing discipline, said: Since the great master has renounced, we too will renounce. Then the great brahmin, Kṛṣṇa-born (Black-Born), shaved his hair and beard, donned the ochre robe, and renounced the world. At that time, countless princes, six royal lineages, seven great brahmins, horses, oxen, and all those preparing for ritual bathing, all followed after him and renounced. This great brahmin, Kṛṣṇa-born, having renounced, abandoned the five defilements: making the mind base, making wisdom base, aligning with harmful ways, remaining bound to suffering—he abandoned all these. He cultivated a mind endowed with great loving-kindness, without rival, without harm, vast and boundless, profoundly trained, unified and dedicated, pervading and complete, abiding thus. Likewise, with this mind of loving-kindness, he pervaded in the two directions, three, four, above, below, and all around, suffusing the entire world with loving-kindness and abiding thus. Likewise, with compassion, with sympathetic joy, and with equanimity, he pervaded and abided thus. At that time, his name became known as Kṛṣṇa-born (Black-Born). From then on, the teacher Kṛṣṇa-born, accompanied by countless followers, went from city to city and village to village; all gazed upon him and paid homage. At that time, seven great disciples arose: Sword-Bearer, Pure Giver, and others. As the verses say: In the great clan of Kaliṅga, in the stony land, they wandered for alms. In the land of Vārāṇasī, the Kṛṣṇa-born guided the assembly. Thus many beings abandoned desire, revealed the path of pure chastity, and attained meditation. These brahmins, with great wisdom and courage, benefited living beings.
