Seven great-like figures, and forty wives befitting their respective statuses, followed after. He also had five hundred Brahmin boys recite the secret mantras of the Brahmins. Trainers, elephant riders, horse riders, swordsmen, archers, attendants, stone throwers, dancers, brave princes, guards, barbers, and many bathers were also made to follow. There, the great Brahmin was renamed as born of Krishna. Thereafter, the Brahmins revered that great Brahmin as Brahma, the king revered him as a deity, and the people of the towns and villages revered him as a king. The Brahmins thought that the great Brahmin, born of Krishna, had known and realized the path of Brahma, and was dwelling in it completely and perfectly. The king and all the villagers thought likewise. Then, the great Brahmin, born of Krishna, thought to himself: Since everyone respects me, saying that I have perfectly dwelt in the path of Brahma, but I neither know the path of Brahma, nor have I realized and perfected it. I have heard from my father, the Brahmin, that in the four months of summer, in a secluded place practicing the meditation of compassion, Brahma will come to that person. Therefore, I think I should do so for the four months of summer. First, he told King Micrena, please allow me to temporarily follow others, I wish to temporarily dwell in a secluded place practicing the meditation of compassion. The king also said, please, teacher, know when the time is right. Then, he said to the seven royal families, seven Brahmins, seven householders, and forty wives: Wise ones, do not be distracted for now, stay at home with caution. I wish to dwell in a secluded place practicing the meditation of compassion for the four months of summer. They also replied: So be it. He also said the same to the five hundred Brahmin boys, listen carefully and grasp the knowledge of what you have heard and understood. To the other trainers, etc., up to the bathers, he said: Wise ones, seek other followers for now. I wish to dwell in a secluded place practicing the meditation of compassion for the four months of summer.

The venerable one said: “I shall enter meditation.” Then the great Brahmin built a fine house in the eastern part of the city and, dwelling there in solitude for four summer months in meditation, did not see Brahmā come before him. When but one day remained of the fourth summer month, he thought: “I heard from my father that Brahmā would come to me, yet until now he has not appeared.” Then Brahmā, the Lord of the Unconsuming, knowing his thought, merely by stretching and bending his mighty hand, came from the Brahmā world into that house. At that time, the whole house was pervaded by great radiance, and the light descended beneath the sky. Seeing it, the Brahmin thought: “Such a color I have neither seen nor heard. O friend of noble form and splendid complexion, who are you?” Brahmā replied: “Wherever gods dwell with the Brahmā host and their companions, they know this: the wise and learned youth such as this—know that he was born of the Dark Deity.” Thus, with verses he made question and reply. The one born of the Dark Deity thought: “I have now attained what is to be achieved in this life. I shall strive for the purpose of future life.” Yet doubts arose, and he asked the Brahmā youth: “In what place, through what training, does one gain the deathless Brahmā world?” Brahmā answered: “Among humans, abandon the thought ‘I will do this.’ Dwell alone, with a compassionate and devoted mind, stainless, without attachment, free of entanglements. Abiding thus, a human can attain the deathless Brahmā world.” The great Brahmin, having heard, said: “The meaning of the first and second verses I understand, but the third—concerning ‘without stain’ and the like—I do not understand. O Brahmā, what is stain among humans?” Brahmā replied: “All the world is like rainwater flowing from the roof; whatever it covers becomes possessed of defilement leading to the lower realms. Not knowing this path, one cannot attain the Brahmā realm. Anger, falsehood, quarrel, harm, deceit, overt pride, impatience, desire, hatred, delusion, jealousy, miserliness, harshness—these are the stains within humans.”
