I thought: If I cannot devise a means here, I shall surely starve to death. So he said to the prison guard: I truly took a pearl seed, and it was given by the merchant’s son. The guard then reported this to the king’s men, who also detained him, placing the two in the same confinement. From the merchant’s son’s household came many kinds of food, which the beggar too partook of. But the beggar said: Since you must pay for my share of the food, I shall not give it freely. Thus he ate but did not share. The merchant’s son, angered and uneasy, said: If you will not heed me, I shall not go with you. The beggar replied: Since you do not listen to my words, I too shall not go. Then he spoke gently, calming the merchant’s son’s displeasure. Later, the merchant’s son said: We two should carry provisions together. The beggar rejoiced, thinking: Before, I wandered through every city, never finding sufficient food. Now, here I enjoy rich meals. Yet since one friend alone cannot long suffice, he thought to bring in another—a female peddler. Thus she too was confined. Together they ate and drank in delight. The beggar said: Even if for twelve years I am not freed, it would be wearisome. Later, desire arose in him: with one female peddler alone, it is not enough. Seeking greater pleasure, he brought in a dancing girl. He said: I too carry a pearl seed. So she too was placed in the prison. Then the four dwelt together, enjoying merriment for a long time. They said to the beggar: Why not find a way to release us? If so, you would no longer worry. He agreed, saying: What others cannot do, I, being the son of a great physician, can accomplish. He told the king’s men: This beggar is the son of the great physician. Thus they also confined him, and the son of the physician was cast into prison.

Upon hearing that his son was thrown into prison, he thought: “For the sake of my child, it is not proper for me not to go to the king’s palace.” Thus, he went to the palace and said to the king: “Why has my son, who prayed devoutly to the gods, been cast into prison?” The king, holding a beggar with scattered pearls, replied: “It is just as you have said.” The great physician, having carefully listened to those words, addressed the king: “These pearls should not be taken by anyone, they should be discarded.” The king then cast them all away. Afterwards, the great physician went to the pleasure garden, inquiring and observing. At the top of a tree he saw a monkey, and thought: “If this monkey is brought, there might be a method.” So he said to the king: “Bring the queens along to the garden.” The king came with the queens and sat. The physician said: “Let the queens adorn themselves with ornaments.” The monkey also imitated, adorning itself and wearing a pearl necklace around its neck. The physician made the queens dance; the monkey also danced, and the pearl necklace fell from its neck as it acted like a human. The physician further told the queens to bow their heads and dance; the monkey also bowed its head and danced, and the pearl necklace fell to the ground. The king was delighted, removed the ornament from the physician’s neck, rewarded him, and granted him treasures to enjoy. Afterwards, six ministers gathered and deliberated: “In earlier times, the king honored and praised us, but now this physician, who comes from a rocky village, of wild and unrefined mind, has made us entirely without prestige. What should we do?” One said: “Formerly, we were disunited and divided, and thus became powerless. Now let us outwardly comply with the pleasure garden affair, but inwardly keep resentment. When the king and the physician abandon us, they will once again depend on us.” Speaking thus, they went to the garden, and the physician perceived their intent…

I thought to myself: ‘These men will never gather together unless they plan to do something unlike before.’ With suspicion, I secretly followed behind Ne-tsö Ma-ta-ra to observe what they were thinking and saying. Then six ministers assembled, made a pact of friendship, and said: ‘If each of us reveals one secret to the others, the king will come to fully trust us.’ Thus they did so. One confessed: ‘We ate the king’s parrot.’ Another said: ‘I lay with the queen.’ I too said: ‘I intend the same.’ In this way, each shared hidden deeds, and all together they swallowed them into one vessel. Ne-tsö heard all this and reported it to the great physician. The physician went before King Skye-ba and declared: ‘The ministers of the gods appear righteous and pure, but in truth they are thus.’ He explained everything. King Skye-ba realized fully and exclaimed: ‘Alas! My ministers are so unreasonable. Drive them to a place beyond my authority!’ Thus they were expelled into wilderness. In truth, the great physician was the Blessed One himself, and King Skye-ba was Śāriputra. The six ministers then are the six non-Buddhist teachers of today. At that time, I too was one of those ministers, cast into exile; but now I have attained unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, and with miraculous powers I defeated them and expelled them to the borderlands. Furthermore, in earlier times, when the Blessed One himself was the prince Tree Trunk, through his great strength and courage he defeated six rival kings; this ancient tale was likewise told in the Wise and Foolish Sutra. Again, in former times there was a king named Lord of Directions, whose son was called Youth Particle. The king’s Brahmin was named Black-born, whose son, a Brahmin boy, was called Fire-guardian. This boy, endowed with intelligence and discernment, displayed wisdom. He was then a Bodhisattva, and later was born before the Buddha, becoming who he is now. Thus, his father, the Brahmin Black-born, never questioned about matters of agriculture, leaving all to the Brahmin boy Fire-guardian. That boy was none other than the Youth Particle of the past.
