The woman wished to drink from such a stream, but the sages of old said, 'No,' and thus she was not given. Then, because no rain had fallen, she was driven out of the monastery by the monks. The two of them obtained some dog meat, which the ugly man roasted and ate. The girl asked to be given some, but as before, she was refused. The girl said, 'To one as vile as me, the monks will not give.' Her parents said, 'What fault has our daughter? Why would they refuse even this?' Speaking thus, they left together. Later, they saw an Udumbara tree (Udumbara tree, Ficus glomerata) bearing fruit, and the ugly one climbed up and ate. The girl said, 'Do not eat alone, also give some to the wretched boy.' He said, 'I have eaten the ripe ones, I will throw down the unripe ones.' She said, 'Do not throw them away, please give the unripe ones also.' He replied, 'Evil woman, if you want the unripe fruit, climb up yourself and eat.' Thus, being driven out by the monks, she climbed the tree with effort and ate. The ugly man thought, 'Someone as meritless as I, to be saved by such a little girl, what can I say? She should not even look upon me.' Then he fell from the tree, was scratched by branches, and abandoned. At that time, the king went out hunting, and hearing the sorrowful cries of an abandoned maiden, he sought her out. He saw that she was beautiful like a forest goddess, and asked, 'Are you a goddess, or a yaksha, or a rakshasi?' She replied, 'I am not a goddess or such; I am human, bereft of family and home.' Then the king dismounted from his horse and lay with her. Afterwards, he placed her upon his horse, brought her back, and they enjoyed one another in delight. The brahmin, walking along, lamented: 'I left the girl at the monastery, perhaps she is well, I shall return and bring her.' Returning, he did not see her, and was told another had brought her to the king as consort. Hearing this, he was utterly anguished. Though he reached the king’s palace gate, he did not dare to enter. Looking upon the king’s attendants, he thought, 'Let these be struck with stones.' Thus he carried stones and hurled them at the palace.

Then he went in to observe, and saw his wife playing with the king. He thought, "How can I speak with this wife?" So he thought: "The base is made of gold, placing eight, making it joyful. Does the virtuous wife not like me? The carpenter picks up a stone." To this, the woman also (recalled) saying: "In that place I said, women should not eat meat. I remember saying those words, here is discarding and placing playthings." And so on, like before, various verses were recited back and forth. The Brahmin then said: "Throw me from the mountaintop, Brahmin woman, you also eat poison. For your sorrow, I have come. The carpenter picks up a stone." He said these things. The woman said: "Throw me from the mountaintop, Brahmin, you also eat poison. When desired, do not desire, use playthings to make a home." The two of them spoke to each other in this way, and the king was pleased, (saying) "Goddess, I did not understand what you said, what is that, tell me." She also explained in detail everything that had happened before, (saying) "This is my husband, my parents entrusted me to him, this Brahmin is proficient in all learning." The king said: "What to do now? How can he be satisfied? Do you want to leave with him?" The woman said: "How can he not love me, his mantra cannot take effect, his mantra power cannot take effect, then I would be willing." The king told the great minister about this, and the minister said: "I will think of a way to prevent him from separating from the king." So he summoned the Brahmin, (asking) "What are you looking for? What are you doing coming to the king's palace?" He said: "My wife was taken away by the king's favor, so I have come to find her." The minister said: "Do you recognize your own wife?" He said he did. The minister said: "I will place five hundred consorts before you, there, if you seize one who is not your wife, your body will be chopped into pieces." He agreed. So all the king's consorts were adorned with jewels,

In the place where the king’s ritual offerings and prayers were performed, all the queens appeared in procession, led by Udumbarika at the front. They appeared before the king like goddesses. The great physician said to the Brahmin: “If you can recognize your own wife, then take her from among them.” But the Brahmin, seeing Udumbarika and the other queens adorned with all manner of ornaments, became confused as if enchanted by a serpent’s spell, gazing as if unable to endure the brilliance of the sun, his thoughts scattered. He then followed behind a maidservant who walked after another queen, and, mistaking her, said: “This is my wife.” The physician replied: “If so, then take her.” The Brahmin took the maid and said: “The highest clings to the highest, the middling to the middling, the lowly to the lowly. My heart clings to women. A beautiful woman is like me, you are also alike. May the goddesses, like those who delight in the groves, come here—I too shall be delighted.” Saying this, he departed with her. Later, because of a certain fault, the king expelled the physician from the palace, and he no longer attended him. Once, the king and the queen together entered the royal park to amuse themselves in the heat of midday. The queen hung her pearl ornament upon the branches of hundreds of thousands of fig and ashoka trees, but later forgot it while playing with the king. At dusk, she recalled the loss of her pearl ornament, which had been carried away by a phantom woman and placed in a tree. The king commanded his men to fetch it quickly, but it was not found. At that time, a beggar, having eaten leftover food, entered the park and departed, but was seized by the king’s men. They said: “No one else was seen, so present the pearl ornament!” The beggar replied: “I did not find it; I only came here seeking scraps of food.” They beat him and cast him into prison. Starved and gazing, he pondered in his mind...
