Hearing the question, “O wise one, how does the earth exist?” the great physician replied: “One must apply a method for this. That king too, beyond the border of the gods, is known as an adversary.” Then the king sent a messenger to summon a maiden. The king of the Five Lotuses conferred with his ministers, deciding to give alms for a time, saying: “Come on this date.” They prepared a feast of food and drink, mingled with poisons, and set out the vessels. The great physician said: “We must examine which deity is the cause of the king’s arising.” The king sent someone to investigate. The great physician said: “There is one named Netso Chösel, exceedingly intelligent; send for him.” He was sent, but when he went to meet, he found no one; entering the royal palace, at the threshold he encountered a mountain gazelle maiden. They greeted each other joyfully. She said: “I am the guardian of the pleasure grove of King Śibi in the northern quarter. I had a gazelle maiden intended as my little wife, but due to karmic bonds she wandered everywhere and has now come here. Might she become your wife?” The gazelle maiden added: “Have you not heard that Netso’s wife is indeed a gazelle maiden named Netso?” Thus the two pledged together, joking and delighting, preparing various foods. Netso asked: “May I take a little of this food?” She replied: “This food is mixed with poison.” Then Netso heard that “the daughter of the king of the Five Lotuses is given to the King of Creation.” He wondered: “Is it true?” The gazelle maiden, being pure of mind, did not give, but plotted to kill through stratagem. Hearing this, Netso and the gazelle maiden spoke gently to each other. Netso reported all these matters to the great physician. Soon, when the Five Lotus King realized he would not come, he arrayed four armies and surrounded the palace of the King of Creation. The great physician thought: “We cannot engage in direct battle; instead, a strategy of division must be used.” Then the King of the Five Lotuses dispatched five hundred ministers, sending out various envoys, creating a division. When the division was complete, he sent a messenger to the King of Creation, saying: “I cannot oppose you, but I wish to ally with you and be kin.”

Thus, there was no contention. Yet, whether you live or die, it must be by my hand; this is truly fitting. Though I possess strength, I will not oppress you. Should doubt arise, then examine among this man and these ministers to whom trust is given. The ministers, hearing this, seized the man together and returned to the western land of the Five Lotus King, slaying five hundred ministers and appointing their sons as ministers. Upon hearing this tale, King Kye-pa rejoiced greatly. The great physician, too, rejoiced when he heard it, thinking: “That maiden I may or may not obtain.” Thus he, with his army, went to the land of the Five Lotus King. That king said: “Enter into the city.” He replied: “I dwell here in this flourishing garden; if truly you wish me to enter, then bid me to some great minister’s house.” The Five Lotus King was alarmed, thinking: “Why does he speak thus? Perhaps he seeks to sow division between me and my ministers.” So he replied: “If you are pleased, then remain here.” The ministers deliberated and said: “All our garments and wealth derive from the physician’s counsel. If we recall former enmity, we should act likewise toward the king, and not let him depart.” They said to the king: “All of this is the great physician’s design; King Kye-pa cannot be harmed. If he remains here, we will go together before the king and overthrow him.” The king said: “Good.” And so, with his fourfold army, he went to the palace of King Kye-pa. King Kye-pa donned his armor. The physician, knowing from which road the Five Lotus King approached, lingered there and discovered where the treasury and the physician’s daughter were. He then led his attendants inside, seized the treasures and the maiden, and returned with his army by another path to his own land. The king and his ministers rejoiced greatly, and many paintings were made in celebration. The chief minister of the Five Lotus King then spoke of how the physician had taken the maiden...

The woman, together with the treasurer, returned with the king of the Five-Lotus Kingdom and his retinue back to their homeland. The daughter born to the king, named Manden, played and rejoiced with her. Then the king of Five-Lotus commanded that a letter be given to his daughter Manden, saying: ‘By means of such methods, it has been done, you should understand this.’ Manden examined it and sent the letter to the great physician called Netsö Chösel, saying in words: ‘It was done by him.’ She urged: ‘Deliver this to Netsö Chösel.’ Thus it was done, and it was handed to him. The king, enraged, ordered: ‘Kill him at once!’ Then Netsö Chösel touched the king’s foot and supplicated: ‘May it be as the divine lord’s fathers and ancestors have slain, so slay me likewise.’ The king agreed, and as was done by the forefathers—he was bound around the neck with wool, scorched with fire, burned and cast away, yet he soared up, setting the king’s palace aflame, manifesting a wondrous sign. Later he returned again before the king, and the great physician asked him: ‘What happened?’ He replied: ‘Thus it was.’ The king again sent a letter to his daughter: ‘Because of such harm, surely send him back again.’ She again delivered it to him. The king, angered, plucked his hair, turned it outward as a topknot, set it like a lump of meat, cast him out and ordered slaves to carry him. The slave requested: ‘If I eat him, it will be food for a single day; if I release him, within a day there will be abundant needs and plenty of food.’ Believing this, the slave let him go. Netsö said to the slave: ‘In the great eastern city there is the king’s palace, stay there.’ The slave obeyed, went, and dwelt in an empty house. The next day, Brahmins went out to worship the gods, cleaning away impurity, offering flowers, incense, and scattered offerings. At that time Netsö Chösel’s body was invisibly present and spoke: ‘O Brahmins! Convey these my words to the sinful king of Five-Lotus!’
