Then, someone came, prostrated, offered the red clothes, and said, "To celebrate the seven-day feast, a ceremony will be held, and the prince will come." That person said, "You go first, I will come soon after." He thought, "I can get (blood) without any effort." He happily sat on the stone stained with the blood of his hands and feet, wearing red clothes, expecting the arrival of the Garuda. He saw an extremely terrifying great Garuda flying from afar. The Garuda scratched him with claws as sharp as vajra iron hooks, but his heart was full of compassion, and he remained unmoved. The peculiar Garuda thought, "Who is this person with (bleeding) hands and feet?" It pecked off the jewel on the top of his head with its beak, and blood stained his whole body. At that time, King Cloud Crest and his consorts were living in the sandalwood forest, worried in their hearts, thinking of the prince, and said, "He went to the mountain, and he hasn't returned yet. Moreover, we also heard the terrifying sound of the Garuda eating people." Just then, a head jewel stained with blood fell from the sky and landed in front of them, with meat and hair attached to it. After seeing it, they thought, "Could this be the jewel of the compassionate Cloud Rider?" Then they fainted on the ground. Malaya Cana also fell to the ground together after seeing it. The lord of vidyadharas, the father king, said, "Queen and bride, wake up. This head jewel devoured by the nagas has fallen like this. Whether Cloud Rider was devoured by the Garuda, or the head jewel fell like this, is still unknown." So, the king, with his consorts and bride, went to the place where there was a stone where the Garuda devoured the nagas. There, the conch crest dragon in red clothes, after prostrating to Gaukarna, quickly came. When he saw Cloud Rider scratched by the Garuda, he wailed and fell to the ground, crying out, "What is going on? I, this sinful person, for the sake of evil purposes, destroyed you, this walking stupa!" He wailed in great pain. Conch Crest also said the same to Cloud Crest and others, and then said to the Garuda, "Peng..."

Without examination, you consumed the omen of the nāga, a sign unfit to eat, yet you gave no thought to it—how can this awareness-holder endure such? To act in such sin without reflection is indeed marvelous, it was said. Hearing these words, the one who rode the cloud fainted, and seeing this, the king together with his queen collapsed as well. Then Māyā also held her own lord, but in a moment lost all memory. Again hearing words of lament, the sky-goer became free from attachment, filled with disgust, and thus fell into misdeed. Then, thinking their son would not survive, the parents spoke to the cloud-rider: “You are taking our lives, yet with compassion you abandoned harsh deeds, sacrificing your own precious body to relieve beings’ decline, but you failed to guard it—what good have you done?” After they asked this, he bowed to his parents and said: “Father, though you did not command me, this fragile body, when given for the sake of others, becomes the cause of attaining a firm state. Therefore, with faith, I pay homage to you.” When he spoke thus, the sky-goer felt deep regret, reproached his own fault, and made the cloud-rider vow: henceforth he should never eat nāga flesh. Thereupon the prince, gravely wounded, with labored breath, remained silent. Knowing he would surely die, the king and ministers prepared a cremation hall and turned the fire toward it. As he was about to enter, Māyā said: “O goddess Gaurī! You once transformed the chariot of the vidyādharas and granted it to the cloud-rider as his mastery. Now I have conceived for seven days—how can your words turn out true? May I, in future lives, still become his consort.” Having prayed thus, she cast into the fire a delicate flower offering of the maṇḍala. Then the goddess Rikesmā appeared, bearing a vase of amṛta, and said directly: “Daughter, your lord will live; whether true or false, it is as I have spoken.” With rays of light from her mouth she illuminated all directions, and by pouring streams of nectar, she restored the cloud-rider’s body to its natural state, as before, alive again.
