Listen. Then, that great being, in a flustered manner, said, "Emaho, how wondrous!" This is what is called the abyss of the ocean, like the mouth of the Lord of Death, from which there is no return once fallen into the abyss. Hearing this, the merchants thought they had fallen to the edge of the abyss of the ocean, and without hope of survival, their minds became bewildered with fear of death. Some wept, some lamented, some cowered and could do nothing. Some lost their minds and, with impoverished hearts, paid homage to the lord of the gods, Indra. Likewise, some sought refuge in the sun, constellations, Venus, the god of wealth, and the gods of the ocean. Some recited mantras, others paid homage to the goddess. Some came before the Well-Gone One and lamented, saying: You who have the great power to liberate from poverty! Please have firm compassion on us helpless ones who have fallen to the edge of the abyss and protect us, and show your great power! This ocean, too, will surely not disobey your command, so please turn back this turmoil! Thus they prayed. At that time, that great being, with a heart of compassion, spoke to those merchants in order to cheer them up: I see that there are still some ways to remedy this, if we can temporarily reconcile with compassion, then cheer up! Hearing this, they thought that there was still a way to remedy this, and without completely despairing, they waited with trust. The Bodhisattva Well-Gone One draped his upper robe over one shoulder, knelt on the boat with his right knee, bowed with his whole body, paid homage to the Thus-Gone Ones, and then said: Merchants, please listen, and you special gods who dwell in the ocean and the sky, from the time I have been conscious, I have never intentionally killed any living being. By this true word and the power of my merit, may this boat return safely without entering the abyss of the ocean! As soon as he spoke, the wind, along with the force of the water, receded, and the boat also returned. Seeing this, the merchants were greatly amazed and rejoiced, Bodhicitta...
