Then they washed the elephant's intestines, filled them with water, and took the roots and fruits. They made offerings to the elephant's corpse, emerged from the wilderness, and prayed that this great being would liberate us from samsara when he attained Buddhahood. Then, in a past age, the Blessed One was born as King Padma in the city of Varanasi, and he cherished all sentient beings with love, as if they were his only child, and engaged in giving and great giving. At that time, due to uneven seasons, a great epidemic occurred, and sentient beings were afflicted with leprosy. The king generated compassion and gathered all the doctors and healed them with medicine, but for a long time he was unable to heal those sentient beings. The doctors said, "There is one medicine, if the fish called Rohita is found, it can be healed, otherwise nothing else can heal it." The king searched everywhere for the Rohita fish, but could not find it. Later, when the king went out for a walk, those sick people gathered and said to the king, "Please save us from this disease and grant us life." The king generated compassion for them, and with tears streaming down, he said, "If I cannot pacify the suffering of others tormented by suffering, then what is the use of this life and the power of the kingdom?" He gave away a great deal of wealth, installed his eldest son as king, confessed his faults to relatives and people, praised the people and ministers of the palace with joyful praise, and comforted the suffering patients. He stayed in the eight-limbed observance, went to the top of the palace, scattered flowers and incense, and faced east and prayed, "By the truth and the word of truth, seeing sentient beings who are extremely poor tormented by disease, I give up my life, may I therefore be born as a Rohita fish in this river called 'Flow-Reverser'." Having said this, he jumped from the top of the palace. The moment he fell, he died and was born as a Rohita fish in the Flow-Reverser River. Then the gods proclaimed everywhere that the Rohita fish had been born in the Flow-Reverser River, and it would be the nectar for those who had been tormented by serious illness for a long time.

When it was announced, "Cut (the meat)!". As soon as they heard this, the people immediately took up weapons such as swords and began to cut the flesh of the living fish. As the Bodhisattva was cutting his own flesh in this way, he was filled with love for those sentient beings, and warm tears streamed down his face. He thought, "I have gained a great treasure by making these sentient beings happy with my flesh and blood." In this way, for twelve years, he satisfied those sentient beings with his own flesh and blood, and he did not turn away from unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. When all those sentient beings were healed of their diseases, the fish named Rohita declared: "O sentient beings, listen! I am the king named Padma. For your sake, I have completely given up my life and taken such a body. Make me happy! When I also attain unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, I will also free you forever from disease and place you in the ultimate attainment and happiness beyond suffering." After saying this, those people who heard these words, as well as the king's ministers and retinue, made offerings with flowers and other things, and prayed: "You who do such difficult things, when you attain Buddhahood, may we become your Shravaka disciples." Thus they prayed. Again, in the past, the Blessed One himself, in the city of Varanasi, was transformed into a king named Brahma-datta, who ruled the kingdom according to the Dharma, was wealthy and happy, and had no diseases, famines, or internal strife. That king also loved the Dharma, was very compassionate, and dwelt in generosity. There, at a later time, like an intermediate kalpa, a great famine occurred, and the people became like hungry ghosts and sought refuge in the king. The king measured what kind of food and drink was in the treasury, and after the skilled calculators had calculated it, he had all the people eat one mouthful each day, and the king himself ate two mouthfuls. There, a Brahmin who was not included in the calculation arrived. The king gave him one of his two mouthfuls, so that the king and all the people of the country ate one mouthful each day. At that time, the lord of the gods thought, "I will test this king who is doing such difficult deeds." So he transformed himself into the form of a Brahmin and, when he arrived at the gate, the king
