One will come to know what is lacking in merit. Then, without asking their father, those youths unhesitatingly entered distant other kingdoms and other places, entering the king's palace and other retinues, settling down in inconspicuous attire. Those with good looks, pleasing to see, were sustained by mere scraps of enjoyment gathered by the people. The diligent, seeing a swift, rapid, and deep river, were afraid, but with great diligence, they dragged a large sandalwood tree that others could not lift, and lived by selling it for tools. Those with skills also lived by the tools made from their crafts. The wise mediated between two merchants who had a long-standing feud, and the two, pleased, gave wealth, and they lived solely on that. The youth named Sonam Tob (Merit Power), in order to proclaim the greatness of his own merit, entered the house of a very poor man. When he entered that house during the day, due to the power of his merit, that house became very wealthy, filled with riches, grain, gold, and silver. The poor man was overjoyed, thinking, "This wealth, which has never happened before, must be due to this man entering my house." He allowed them to enjoy those enjoyments as they pleased, and the poor man became rich. The poor man also thought, "I should honor this one who is renowned for his merit," and he constantly honored him. Then, because a youth who had never been there before came to the poor man's house, it was rumored that the house had become prosperous, and many people liked Sonam Tob and especially spoke of the power of merit. In that land, also, due to the youth's power, the fire-fruit trees flourished, and rain fell in season, so the grains became abundant. When many people were happy and watching, the youth thought, "If only I could have a precious house filled with all kinds of treasures, equipped with various living utensils, and with pleasing servants and workers." The young man did not recognize him and narrated the events in detail, saying, "Friend, I suffer with the suffering of others, I am happy with the happiness of others, therefore, seeing that person despondent with unbearable suffering, I thought to take that suffering upon myself, so I gave up my limbs and by invoking the truth, restored that person to his former state." Then, Indra was greatly astonished and revealed his own body, saying, "When you gave up your limbs, did your mind not regret it?" The young man said, "Kaushika, I have no regrets." Indra said, "How could that be?" The young man said, "Kaushika, then let us do it with the blessing of truth!" Then, placing a mind of love on all sentient beings, when he cut off his own limbs, if I have not regretted it, then by that power of truth, may my body return to its former state!"
