The king asked the fortune tellers, "What is this?" They said, "This is because the deity has entered the queen's womb, it is the power of the prince. He is known as someone with great merit." After that, the queen requested the king, "If I could sit on a lion throne, holding a white umbrella, and holding a whisk with a jewel handle, how wonderful would that be!" The king did as she wished, and her wish was fulfilled. Similarly, she thought, "If I could sit on piles of gold and silver, give alms with my own hands, and make those who have no wealth possess wealth, how wonderful would that be! If I could release all the prisoners, if I could see the garden, if I could speak the truth, sit on the lion throne of the gods, and after teaching the Dharma to the people, some miracles would appear, if the gods could offer all these to me, how wonderful would that be!" All these were fulfilled as she wished. The queen sat on the lion throne, and that throne also rose into the air about seven people high, and the ground also shook. There also appeared a canopy decorated with various precious silks. Most people saw the power of merit, offered incense and other things to the queen, and sat in front of her with their palms joined. After that, the queen spoke this unprecedented verse: Accumulating merit leads to happiness, therefore people should do good deeds, therefore they should do good deeds repeatedly, they should desire to do good deeds. As soon as she said this, a voice came from the sky, "Well said! Very well said!" Heavenly music sounded, and a great rain of heavenly garments fell. King Brightness and all the people were very happy. The gods in the sky took off all the clothes and ornaments from their bodies and offered them to cover the Dharma seat. As soon as that youth was born, the four great kings carried him on a velvet lion throne adorned with various jewels and suddenly offered it. The king of the gods, Indra, held a silk cloth and held a hundred-spoked heavenly umbrella over the youth, holding a jewel-handled whisk. Above it, the gods of the Thirty-Three Realms hung a curtain of heavenly garments. Some scattered jewels. Likewise, each scattered clothes, flowers, ornaments, powdered incense, fragrances and garlands, unguents, and played various heavenly music. Through various works, the entire city became free of stones and rubble. Silk banners and victory banners and flags were erected. The ground was sprinkled with sandalwood water. Many incense burners were hung. Various flowers were scattered, making it like a garden of the gods. A hundred of the best elephants came out of the depths of the forest on their own and stood in the elephant stables. A hundred mares also followed the foals. All the grains also ripened naturally without plowing or sowing, possessing power. Five great treasures filled with various jewels emerged from under the lion throne, and they were inexhaustible even when taken. The beings who were fighting each other also immediately became filled with loving-kindness. As soon as that youth with power and miraculous abilities was born, he remembered his past lives, looked in the four directions, and spoke verses. Accumulating merit will bring happiness, etc., he spoke as before. The gods in the sky also spoke verses showing the greatness of his merit. All the people of that king's country said that the power of this young man's merit was truly amazing, and they especially praised it. King Bright Power happily gave away a large amount of wealth. After some time, because the wealth greatly increased, they held a birth celebration for him, and discussed what name to give him, so they named him Merit Power. The youth Merit Power was entrusted to eight wet nurses, and provided with the necessities of life.

Zangpo raised him, and he grew rapidly like a lotus in the sea. When he grew up, he was taught to read and write, and he eventually mastered it. He became proficient in the five sciences of the royal lineage. That young man was also faithful, virtuous, and kind-hearted, dedicated to benefiting himself and others. He was compassionate, magnanimous, desired the Dharma, loved all beings, delighted in generosity and giving, gave completely and relinquished everything, and abided in great generosity without attachment. Thus, to ascetics, Brahmins, and the poor and suffering, there was nothing that he did not give or completely relinquish, even his own flesh. When beggars came there, he held a loving heart for them, looked to the sky, and thought, 'If what they ask for would come from the sky!' In the moment of generating that thought, it would come to pass. No one knew this. In this way, he fulfilled the wishes of all who begged with various items, and then they would depart. His fame spread throughout the world, from the realm of the Nagas below to the realm of Brahma above, and the sound of his praise resounded. Later, the young man Sonam Tob (bsod nams stobs) (Power of Merit) went to the garden with his four brothers. On the way, they saw many pretas (hungry ghosts) with mouths as small as needles and bellies as large as Mount Meru. They stood like skeletons, their bodies burning, and surrounded by thousands of hands clasped together. No one saw them except Sonam Tob (bsod nams stobs) (Power of Merit). Those pretas said, 'Young man, you are renowned for the power of your merit and have great compassion. Please grant us, who are afflicted by hunger and thirst, food and drink! We have been born as pretas because we were controlled by miserliness. We have not found water for hundreds of years, let alone food.' They said this. The young man looked to the sky with compassion, and when the food and drink of the gods came, those pretas, because of the evil deeds of their past lives, could not see it and said, 'Why do you not satisfy us?' The young man said, 'If these foods and drinks of the gods are given, what harm is there in not eating them?' The pretas said, 'We cannot see those foods and drinks of the gods because of the evil deeds of our past lives.' Then the young man said, 'Alas, the effects of miserliness are truly terrible!'
