Sitting in the garden, he discussed and determined what people lacked. Then, one with form said, 'What is there to examine in this? This is the only realization in the world, that a beautiful appearance is what people lack.' Why is that? Because seeing someone with a beautiful appearance, many people who have never seen them before will be very happy, and those who are unhappy will become happy again. The former sages also said that this beautiful appearance is half of all gains. Furthermore, look, people are happy to see someone with a pleasing appearance and respect them from the heart as if they were the true Dharma.' Having heard this, the diligent one said: 'What is the use of form? Only diligence is what people lack.' Why is that? Because even if one has a beautiful appearance, without diligence, one will not see any desired fruits in this life or the next. Obtaining great wealth and liberation, etc., are the fruits of future lives. Having said this, the one skilled in crafts laughed and said: You speak truthfully and much, in various ways, but my mind is not satisfied. Why is that? Because I have not seen diligence without skill accomplish any fruit, but with skill, I see there is fruit. Therefore, those skilled in crafts are often looked down upon by people, but even if a craftsman is of low birth, he will be respected by kings and others. Those skilled in various kinds of work are well respected by gods and humans. Having said this, the wise one laughed slightly and said: Not only wisdom, but also people's appearance, diligence, and crafts are not looked down upon. Furthermore, through wisdom, one can obtain appearance and crafts, and through diligence, one can also obtain wealth. People's happiness and well-being, everything can be obtained through wisdom. Having said this, the young man named Merit Power smiled slightly and said: If lacking wisdom, then appearance, crafts, and diligence will not be looked down upon, but only when completely grasped by wisdom can they bring fruit, and being looked down upon is true. But wisdom cannot be obtained without merit, therefore, only merit is looked down upon by people. What is called merit is the only beautiful fruit, the chief of fruits of poverty, joy, wish fulfillment, and suitability. Virtues cannot be fully expressed, but in order for you to understand, I will only say a part, through merit one can obtain appearance, through merit one can possess discipline, through merit one can obtain glory, and similarly one can become wealthy.
