Then he arose and set out on the journey. At that time, in the land of King Moonlight, there were many inauspicious omens such as earthquakes and falling stars. The ministers also had bad dreams. At that time, the goddess guarding the city gate made the Brahmin drunk and confused, and did not let him enter the city. Then, the gods of the Pure Abode, in order to complete King Moonlight's perfection of generosity, urged him in a dream. Then, the king sent the minister Great Moon and instructed him, saying: 'Do not stop anyone who comes from the city gate, let them enter.' When Great Moon went to the gate, the gatekeeper goddess revealed her form and said: 'This Brahmin who has come from another country has come with evil intentions to deceive the king of his head, therefore I did not let him in.' The minister said: 'If that is true, then it is a very bad omen. However, I cannot disobey the king's command.' So he ordered. Then, the goddess guarding the city let the Brahmin into the city. The minister Great Moon offered five hundred heads made of seven precious jewels to the king, hoping to deceive the king, but it was not successful, and the king still insisted on giving his head. The king happily agreed to do so in seven days. At that time, the minister Great Moon and Holder of the Earth also died of grief and were reborn in the Brahma realm. That king proclaimed throughout the country: 'Those who wish to see King Moonlight give his head, come!' At that time, all the small kings gathered and pleaded with the king not to give his head, but they could not dissuade him. When he took off his crown from his head, the crowns on the heads of all the people of Jambudvipa fell to the ground. Then, in the grove called Jewel Essence behind that city, he tied his head to a champaka tree, and said, 'Cut off my head and place it in my hands, and then take it. With this generosity, I desire unsurpassed perfect enlightenment for the benefit of all sentient beings.' After saying this, when the Brahmin raised his sword to cut, the tree god struck the Brahmin with one palm, and the Brahmin fell down. The king said to the tree god: 'In the past, I have also given nine hundred and ninety-nine heads from this tree.'

It was done. Because he had completed the giving of his head a thousand times, (the god said) do not hinder my perfection of generosity and unsurpassed enlightenment. After admonishing him in this way, that god restored the Brahmin to his original state. After the king made a great vow, the Brahmin cut off the king's head. He died and was reborn as a god of increasing virtue. At that time, the earth shook in six ways, and the tears of humans and gods fell like rain, and rain of celestial flowers and the like also fell. King Moonlight, because he gave his head, perfected the perfection of generosity, and such a great reputation spread throughout the earth. King Vimasena heard this and was unhappy, his heart broke and he died. The Brahmin took the king's head, and the small kings, ministers, consorts, and all the people cried out in lamentation. Some died, some fainted, some scratched their faces, tore their hair, and fell to the ground. When that Brahmin went on the road, everyone reviled him, and seeing that the king's head was both ugly and stinking, they threw it on the ground and left. On the road, hearing that King Vimasena had also died, he was saddened that his hope had not been fulfilled, his heart broke, he vomited blood, and died. Both the king and that Brahmin were reborn in the great hell of sentient beings. All those who died because of King Moonlight's grief were reborn as gods in the heavens. King Vimasena was a wicked demon, that Brahmin was Deva-given, the minister Great Moon was Shariputra, and Holder of the Earth was Maudgalyayana, so said the Buddha. In the Sutra of Repaying Kindness, the giving of his head by King Great Rays of Light also occurred in a similar manner. Again, in the past, the teacher of a great king who ruled this Jambudvipa, a Brahmin named Nyagrodha, was revered by all like a king, his wealth rivaling that of Vaishravana, and his son was named Great Giving. The Tathagata (Shakyamuni Buddha) was born as that boy, and that boy was also handsome, possessed of auspicious marks, and had reached the other shore of all sciences and arts. When he went out of the city with great wealth, he saw the poor and the people who lived by sin, shed tears of compassion, and asked his father to allow him to give alms.
