My ego's characteristics will appear as a vision. First, in the realm of consciousness, it will appear clearly and distinctly like a reflection in a mirror. As one becomes more familiar with this, it will appear as if directly perceived in one's own sensory realm. If one becomes even more familiar, one will be able to see the appearances of what others perceive in their sensory realms. The first clarity is in the realm of consciousness, the second in the realm of the senses, and the third in the realm of touch, as stated in the Nyingma (early translation) practice texts. Even when only the first clarity is achieved, one should cultivate vipassanā (insight). In this regard, when a Buddha's body, complete with marks and signs, beautiful and pleasing, appears clearly and distinctly as if directly perceived in one's own realm of consciousness, this is merely an appearance of the habitual imprints of one's own mind. It does not come from anywhere, nor does it go anywhere. If examined, it is solitary, not found externally or internally. It depends on the mind and is merely an interdependent arising of habituation. The mind in which this appearance appears, if examined, is not found externally or internally. Since it is without basis or root, what need is there to mention this appearance? Therefore, this appearance has no essence whatsoever. Just as this appearance is, so too is the actual appearance of the Buddhas in the world. It is due to the power of the interdependent arising of the pure roots of virtue of sentient beings' own minds and the great aspirations of the Buddhas in the past. Just as the image of a person appears in a clean mirror, although it appears without deception to worldly people, the Tathāgata (one thus gone) does not possess even the slightest dharma (phenomena) that is distinguished by the aggregates, elements, and sense bases. This is because the wisdom body, which is equal to the realm of dharma, is extremely difficult to fathom. The Ornament of Wisdom Appearance Sutra states: "The Tathāgata, with endless virtue, is an image of dharma; in this, there is no suchness, nor is there a Tathāgata; in all the worlds, images appear everywhere." And, the Samādhi (meditative absorption) of the Present Buddha Abiding Directly states: "The Buddha is examined by the mind of bodhicitta (awakening mind)."

The mind is also completely pure, its nature is luminous, unmixed, and not mingled with all beings. Whoever knows this will perfectly attain supreme enlightenment. As it is said, one should examine and understand with wisdom. Having understood in this way, just as the Tathagata is, similarly, all phenomena of appearance and existence, encompassed by the aggregates, elements, and sense bases, appear and are experienced in this world due to dependent origination. However, all of these are merely appearances due to their respective causes and conditions, arising dependently. If one examines them well, one will not find even a particle of inherent nature in any dharma. For example, like the realm of illusionary appearances and dream appearances, there is actually no coming and going, arising and ceasing, etc. However, ordinary people, clinging to appearances as they appear and abandoning separate examination, grasp at birth and death, etc., as existing. This is like someone with cataracts having the notion of removing the illusion of hair falling in front of their eyes. From beginningless time, those whose minds are defiled by the cataract of ignorance do not know the true reality. For those who have realized the true reality, these appearances do not need to disappear. Rather, seeing that these appearances themselves, while appearing, are not established as anything, they realize that these dharmas have never arisen from their own nature. As it is said in the Sutra Requested by Ma Dros Pa: "Whatever arises from conditions is unborn; in it, arising is without inherent nature; whatever depends on conditions is said to be empty; whoever knows emptiness is mindful." And in the Mother of the Buddhas Sutra: "All dharmas are like illusions and dreams; nirvana is also like illusions and dreams; if there is a dharma superior to nirvana, that too is like an illusion and a dream." And in the Samadhiraja Sutra: "Like a mirage, a city of gandharvas, like an illusion, like a dream, contemplating signs is empty of inherent nature. Know all dharmas to be like that." And in the Fundamental Wisdom of the Middle Way: "Like a dream, like an illusion, like a city of gandharvas."
