As it is said, "In the realm of desire, joy arises manifestly; agitation and distraction must be subdued." Thus, all sentient beings are controlled by such a distracted mind. I must not be lazy in any way; I should strive diligently. If I strive, there is nothing that cannot be accomplished in the end. Having generated this thought, I should strive to remain focused on the object of meditation for a long time. What is the result of such effort? The previous large and coarse thoughts, wild and intense, will subside somewhat. However, when many busy and chaotic thoughts of various kinds are constantly arising, this is called the second experience, like water in a narrow cave. The water in a narrow cave, though busy and noisy, is slower than the water on a steep cliff, which is used as an example. Then, if you do not give up effort and remain in the previous state, the thoughts of the mind will gradually calm down and seem to rest on the object of meditation. However, if you examine closely, many subtle thoughts will continue to arise constantly. This is called the third experience, the experience of habituation. Its example is like a slowly flowing river. From a distance, the water appears continuous and its movement is not visible, but if you go closer, you will see that the water is moving slightly and not stopping. After that, if you strive without giving up effort, it will not be as difficult and painful as before, so from then on, you should strive even more continuously. By doing so, the movement of subtle thoughts will also subside. If you stay with the object of meditation with effort, you can stay as long as you can, but it is not that you cannot be moved by any circumstances. This is called the fourth experience, the stable experience like an ocean free from waves, because the mind is stable and firm. Having obtained this experience, if you get used to this state for a long time without having to make great efforts, the fifth perfect experience, like a mountain, will arise. This is effortless action and the meaning is the same, that is, the mind naturally merges into the object of meditation, and you can stay as you wish without effort, and you will not be disturbed by thoughts. This is the accomplishment of the desired one-pointedness of mind. At this time, various experiences arising from the stability of the mind will also arise. After getting used to this state, the mind and body become extremely

The so-called Vipassanā, is when the body and mind become workable, and even if one remains for many days on whatever object of focus, there will be no physical or mental exhaustion. The body will become as light as cotton, and the mind will be filled with clear joy. This pliancy (shin sbyangs) is initially coarse, heavy, and stable, but then, through habituation, the previous state will disappear, becoming extremely thin and clear like a shadow. This unwavering calm abiding (zhi gnas) is in accordance with the actual meditative mind. Such meditation is given the name calm abiding because it is a very tamed mind. This also belongs to the category of the preliminary stage of the first dhyana, the uninterrupted samadhi. Whether one meditates on a formed object of focus or formless emptiness, etc., one will be able to understand it. Among these, the limbs for accomplishing calm abiding include the four mental engagements and the six powers, etc. Although there are many terms, in essence, it is about settling the mind on any object of focus, well-maintained by mindfulness and awareness, and through habituation, the five experiences arise. When such calm abiding is accomplished, through the power of the mind's workability, the body becomes well-formed, beautiful, comfortable, and strong, and the mind becomes clear and pure, able to engage in various objects. The body and mind will be especially changed by the moisture of immeasurable joy and happiness, afflictions will be reduced, and one will experience a special joy of inner solitude that is in accordance with it. In that state of calm abiding, through the power of merit from focusing on the Buddha's form and the blessings of the Buddha, whether in reality, in experience, or in dreams, one will see the Buddha and attain the Dharma, etc., and various aspects of qualities will arise in one's own continuum. Having thus accomplished calm abiding, one should then enter into the yoga of insight (lhag mthong), but what is that like? Just as when one first practices calm abiding, one settles the mind on a painted image of the Buddha as the object of focus, or even without an object of focus, one settles the mind on the appearance in the mind, etc. In any case, when calm abiding is accomplished, even without an object of focus, the form of the Buddha will clearly appear in one's own mind, in the manner of clear
