King named Wisdom King, went for alms in the vast palace of the king, Saldan, and came back filling the alms bowl. The Blessed One, this one named Immaculate Arm, the son of a merchant, when that boy was sitting on his mother's lap, the monk saw him. He went to him and begged for food. The monk gave him one modaka. Then he followed him and went to the Tathagata. There, the monk gave the alms bowl to the boy and had him offer it to the Tathagata. He offered it to the Sangha including the Buddha, as much as he wanted, and it was not exhausted. The monk made that boy take refuge, receive vows, and generate Bodhicitta. That boy's parents went to look for the boy, urging the boy. The boy and his parents, and about five hundred beings, all became monks and generated Bodhicitta. The Blessed One said, "That was the first generation of Bodhicitta for the sake of Bodhi." Similarly, in the Sutra of Subduing Immorality, it says: In the past, when the Tathagata was called Extremely Radiant, the Bodhisattva Maitreya, having become a Chakravartin king, after generating Bodhicitta, after forty-four billion kalpas, this Blessed One generated Bodhicitta from the Invincible Victory Banner of other Tathagatas. He offered all the means of happiness to that Buddha for a thousand years, and covered him with five hundred thousand divine cloths, accumulating merit. After that Buddha passed into Nirvana, he built a stupa made of seven precious jewels, one yojana in height and half a yojana in width, and made aspirations for unsurpassed Bodhi. Also, in the Sutra of Repaying Kindness, Ananda asked the Blessed One, how long has your compassionate and loving intention towards the Sangha lasted? The Blessed One replied: In the past, beyond countless unspeakable kalpas, there were two people who had committed evil deeds. The guards of hell made them pull a chariot, running back and forth without rest, and beating them with iron hammers. One of them, because he was weak, could not pull it, and was beaten with an iron hammer.

Having been struck and died, he then revived. There, one person developed compassion for him, saying, 'Let me alone pull this cart, release this man.' The guardian became angry and struck him with an iron hammer, causing him to die and be reborn as a god of the Thirty-Three. In that way, at that time, I was in the hell realm, and the one who generated loving-kindness was me. There, I first generated compassion for the hell beings. Then, I generated loving-kindness and compassion for all beings to the same extent.' Thus he spoke. This is the story of how the hell-cart driver, named Gyadpakshita, first generated loving-kindness. Furthermore, in the Vinaya-vastu, the assembly of Shravakas asked the Bhagavan where he first generated compassion. In response, he said: 'In the past, in the country of a king named Od-dan (Glorious), there appeared a precious elephant, white like a kumuda lotus, possessing seven limbs, very stable, beautiful in form, and pleasing to behold. The king entrusted it to a skilled elephant trainer, who tamed it and returned it to the king. The king and the trainer rode it to go hunting. After a while, the elephant smelled the scent of a female elephant in the forest and ran after the scent. The elephant was as fast as the wind, and they felt the earth and sky spinning, becoming very frightened. They said to the trainer, 'Subdue this elephant king!' The trainer said, 'I can recite the secret mantra spoken by the sage and stab it with an iron hook. However, neither the iron hook, nor the rope, nor the iron chain can subdue the mind of desire. The pain of desire arises like something, increases in some ways, and subsides in some ways.' Having said this, he tried to turn the elephant back, but could not. At that time, he said to the king, 'O god, let this elephant accidentally grab a tree branch!' Then, the king and the trainer both grabbed the tree branch and hung there. Having escaped from the brink of death, the king said to the trainer, 'You have given me an untamed elephant!' The trainer said, 'O god, it is completely tamed.'

Because of the smell of the female elephant, it was impossible to listen. Even so, from the recovery of reason and thought, it will not be long before it returns again. After that, the elephant passed seven days, freed from madness, and after recovering reason and thought, it returned to its original place and stayed. After that, the tamer quickly said to the king. The king said: Have you not tamed it? He said: It has been tamed. Should I show it in front of the gods? He took an iron hammer burned red with coal fire, brought it to the place of taming, and began to let it take it. When it began to take it without fear, the tamer said: Gods, if it can be taken, it will die if taken. The king said: Alas, wise one, what use is such a tame one to us who are lax? Gods, didn't you say before that the body can be tamed, but the mind cannot? I have tamed the body, but I have not tamed the mind. The king said: Have you seen or heard of anyone who can tame the mind? The tamer was urged by the gods and said: Gods, there are Buddhas, World Honored Ones, who can tame body and mind. In order to destroy the faults arising from desire, many people try hard, but because they know they cannot do it, their diligence diminishes and they retreat. Etc. verses. I have tamed such a beautiful and perfect elephant by various means. The king has no form, but his mind is very subtle, and even the immortals cannot tame it by washing it with water. Etc. The great king Buddha, with great power, abandoning afflictions, is a hero, with strength, and he and any follower similar to him can control the formless mind here. After that, King Light Victory heard of the diligence and power of the World Honored Ones, and gave alms, did good deeds, and vowed to attain unsurpassed perfect Bodhi. With this great almsgiving, may I become a self-born Buddha in samsara, and save the beings whom the past kings failed to save. Etc., he said. There, he first aroused the unsurpassed perfect Bodhicitta and made a vow.
