Even if it is said that there is no prior concept, it was not possible to dissuade many monks of the Hearer Vehicle. Why is that? Because those monks did not have the power of faith, so they did not have the fortune to accomplish the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. Therefore, a Bodhisattva who wishes to benefit sentient beings should strive for the power of faith. Thus it was said. Furthermore, in the past there was a king named "Object of Certainty," who possessed Dharma and thought that all things are determined because whatever is done by something becomes that way and not otherwise. At that time, the Blessed One himself became that king's minister, named "Practicer of Dharma," who was intelligent and discerning, skilled in what should and should not be done, completely governed the kingdom, attended to and revered countless Buddhas, and resided in the Great Vehicle. In order to turn the king away from the idea of absolutely grasping things, he had gold vessels made, and separately made containers for sesame oil, butter, curd, food, drink, and condiments, etc. Then he asked the king: Great King, what are these vessels for? The king said: Village chief, you should know what these are suitable for. He said: This is a water vessel, this is a sesame oil vessel, etc., and specifically pointed them out. Later, butter was poured into the sesame oil vessel, and the vessels were exchanged and poured in this way. When the king was invited to attend the parasol trade, he told the attendant: Bring water from the water vessel for washing. When the attendant presented the vessel filled with water, the king saw that it was not the previous vessel and said to the minister: Village chief, haven't these vessels been wasted? How did you pour butter into the water vessel? By pouring it in such a mess, haven't all the vessels been wasted? The minister said: Just as the shapes of these vessels have been defiled, all things have the end of decaying, and nothing is certain. All things are completely changing, impermanent, changing into something else, not eternal, and uncertain. Great King, please cultivate the concept of the movement of impermanent and uncertain things. Great King, also...

Youth turns into middle age, adulthood turns into old age, and old age also leads to death. Therefore, there is no certainty in all things. That king abandoned clinging to the certainty of things, thinking, "I should strive to understand what the village chief said, 'Ah, know well.'" Furthermore, in the past, the Blessed One himself was born as a king named Seeking Youth. When he renounced the kingdom and went forth into homelessness, he thought about the wandering of the senses in various realms: "Alas, which realms have I abandoned to go forth, but the wandering of the senses is neither good nor appropriate. Therefore, one must rely on the samadhi that is equal to space, and with great strength, completely suppress those things that have been deluded by the senses and placed in the box of realms. Then, what is the samadhi that is equal to space, as spoken of by the great Bodhisattvas?" He also thought, "These dharmas are equal to space. Just as there is no obstruction in space, all realms are also like space, and complete non-discrimination is without obstruction. Discrimination is bondage, and non-discrimination is liberation." Therefore, I should abandon discrimination. Thinking thus, he began to cut off all attachments, thereby attaining the samadhi that is equal to space and gaining tolerance for the unborn dharma. At that time, he gained the ability to increase the power of the Dharmadhatu, manifesting himself to be as tall as seven palm trees, and said: "Whoever follows the unobstructed dharma, knows the realm of all Buddhas. Enters the realm of past Buddhas, knows the dharmas of the kings of dharma. All these dharmas are like space, there is no dharma nature to be known. In dharma nature, one realizes that there is no dharma nature. All these dharmas are unchanging and non-dual." And so on, he spoke these verses. In this way, that king, without having heard it from another, gained tolerance for the unborn dharma through his own wisdom. The Blessed One said: "Son of Maudgalyayana, therefore, a son or daughter of good family who desires to awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment
