He said, "Agreed." The two of them raced each other, and when they arrived at Bārāṇasī, they saw King Brahma-bestowed's Brahma Pond, which was higher and deeper than a lake, adorned with various kinds of flowers and many flowering trees, and various kinds of birds making sounds. Seeing this, the Goose King and his entourage landed there and began to play. Goose King Facial Growth said to his retinue, "Go and play." After saying this, he temporarily seized the kingdom and then left to play. Having said this, he quickly went and seized the goose kingdom. Then, five hundred geese circled around and landed in the Brahma Pond. Because he lived cautiously, the people saw him and thought, "Such a leader of the goose flock, with such an excellent form, has become the ornament of this pond, overwhelming all the birds." Thinking this, they all happily looked at him. The ministers reported this to the king. The king ordered, "Catch those birds, but do not harm them." Those people caught them with a soft net. The Goose King said: "I have been caught in a strong net, and have become a slave of men, there is no way to avoid it. In any case, please quickly release those goose flocks, do not let them get hot." After saying this, all the geese except one fled. One was caught, and one was not caught, but seeing it sitting there oppressed by sorrow, they were amazed and brought that goose flock leader to the king. Although the other one was not caught, because of his love for it, he went himself. There, they offered the goose flock leader to the king, and (asked) "Why did you bring the other one with you?" (Answer) "This divine goose, although not caught, came himself." The king was amazed at this and developed faith. That king placed the goose flock leader on a lion throne, and that goose, in human language, arranged for the king and his entourage to practice the ten virtuous deeds. The king ordered a proclamation throughout the country that no one should kill the creatures living in the water. Thus, the Goose King Facial Growth was the Blessed One himself. A similar situation, the story of the Goose King Protector of the Land, is also recorded in the thirty-fourth Jataka. Furthermore, in a previous life, the Blessed One himself was a golden-maned deer, who became the leader of the deer, the splendor of whose body was inconceivable.

The creature that possesses wealth and is pleasing to the eyes and minds of all, whoever sees it, thinks of it and stays there. Knowing that it is being thought of, it dwells in fear of hunters and the like. A crow asked it why it was so fearful and afraid, and it replied, "My body causes desire in all, so I am fearful and afraid of hunters and the like." The crow said, "I am also afraid of owls, so we should protect each other. I will protect you during the day, and you protect me at night." They made a vow. If a person with his hands tied tightly backwards is carried away by a strong flood, he cries out, calling, "Who is there to save me from this fear? I will be his slave and do anything for him." By chance, the lord of beasts, surrounded by a group of wild animals, came to the riverbank and met the man. The man cried out, and the other beasts fled. Bodhisattvas, even if they are transformed into fallen bodies, their minds are not like that, so the lord of beasts, with a heart filled with compassion, immediately began to enter the river. The crow, also because of the vow made earlier, followed him in order to always protect him. It tried to get the man out and said, "Lord of beasts, let go, do not hesitate. These people are ungrateful and do not remember kindness." The great Bodhisattva is unstoppable, so without listening to the crow's words, he entered the river and, like a mother to her only beloved child, had the man ride on his back, brought him to the shore, untied his bonds, let him catch his breath for a moment, and said, "Child, go as you please from this path." Then the man joined his palms and touched the feet of the lord of beasts, saying, "You have given me life, I will be your slave and do anything for you." The beast said, "Now you should not be my slave, nor do anything for me. For the sake of my skin, I will be killed, do not show me to others. Child, what you should do is this."
