Thus, it disappeared. Furthermore, in a previous life, when the Bhagavan himself was reborn as Indra, the king of the gods, a hermit lived in the forest, and wild animals and birds stayed happily by his side like disciples. There, a very cute baby elephant was born, and after it was separated from its mother, the hermit treated it with love like a son. The baby elephant also took lotus roots and lotus leaves, etc., and handed them to the ascetic. It lived near the leaf hut, and the hermit took it wherever he went, having it carry animal skins and other things back. It also helped the hermit with various tasks. One day, the baby elephant followed its mother and wandered into the forest. After the hermit performed fire offerings and other rituals, he looked for the baby elephant but could not find it. So he stopped eating and followed its footprints, and when he saw it suckling its mother's milk, he felt very sad. When the baby elephant saw the hermit, it came to greet him. The hermit, with tears in his eyes, stroked its head and said, "Why are you drinking your mother's milk? Drink water and come back to our dwelling." After saying this, he took it back, built a leaf hut for it, and guarded it day and night, treating it with loving-kindness. Bodhisattva Indra, with his divine eye, saw that the hermit had great affection for the baby elephant and had developed a strong attachment in his heart. He thought, "This hermit has abandoned his relatives and lives in the forest, but he is so attached to the baby elephant. He has not yet gained the ability to discriminate and discern, so I must find a way to subdue him." So Indra transformed himself into a disease that afflicted the baby elephant, hindering the hermit's virtuous deeds. The hermit did not observe carefully, but was only worried about losing it, and recited various lamentations. At this time, the king of the gods appeared in the form of a hermit and said to him, "Great hermit, you have abandoned your own relatives and live in the forest, but now you are uttering unbearable lamentations because of the death of this baby elephant. This is like an elephant bathing, you

Now, what are you doing here that deserves the laughter of the wise? No one has gained anything by weeping over death. Since the ancient sages knew that all things are perishable, they abandoned wealth and attachment to all beings and lived in the forest. Since you are living in the forest, you should not bind yourself with the rope of attachment! Since all compounded things are impermanent and are sure to change in the end, attachment to gentleness will only lead to your own death, and it is impossible to be together forever. In this cycle of existence, all suffering arises from attachment and clinging, and liberation is attained from non-attachment. To this well-spoken word of Shakyamuni, he praised and respectfully said, 'Well said!' At that time, the Bodhisattva said: Do not follow after alluring appearances and let the senses run wild, but guard with mindfulness, turn your back on the objects of the senses, and thus you will attain accomplishment. Act as the holy ones have taught, and do not become ordinary beings. Hearing this, the hermit praised, 'Well said!' At that time, he manifested in the form of Indra, the lord of the gods, and said, 'I am Indra, the lord of the gods, and I will revive this child with my power.' So he was about to revive him. Shakyamuni also, because of illness, at the time of death, abandoned that baby elephant in the herd of elephants, and that baby elephant became the lord of the herd. He offered Shakyamuni a gourd filled with water and branches with fruit. Shakyamuni also touched his head with his hand and spoke some beneficial teachings, and then Shakyamuni meditated single-mindedly in his hut. Once upon a time, on the shore of Lake Ma Dros, there was a goose king named "Protector of the Land," who had two sons named "Perfect" and "Beautiful Face." The elder brother, "Perfect," was of a violent nature, often threatening the geese, plucking their feathers, and scratching them with his claws, so the geese informed the goose king of this matter. The goose king thought, if the violent "Perfect" is made crown prince, the goose flock will surely disintegrate, and a way must be found. So, he said to his two sons: Each of you lead five hundred attendants to inspect the rivers, lakes, and ponds, and whoever returns to me first, I will make him the leader of the goose flock.
