Because attachment gives rise to sorrow and causes one to fall, you should now dispel your sorrow. After saying this, she regained her memory. Emaho! Your teachings, like a lamp, have dispelled the darkness of my evil thoughts. After praising her with joy, that woman remained in her natural state, and the Bodhisattva led her into the midst of her relatives. Her actions were universally praised by the students and the people. Also, in the past, in Varanasi, the queen of King Brahma gave birth to a Brahmin who was skilled in the Vedas. He went to the forest to search for herbs, and after collecting them, he rested in the middle of a rock when a non-human woman saw him. They fell in love with each other, and both went to the non-human woman's abode. There, the entrance to the cave was blocked by a large stone, and they stayed there, indulging in their desires. Later, the Bhagavan (Shakyamuni Buddha) was born as their son. By the time he was eight years old, he had understood many treatises from his father and was also proficient in astrology. Then, he and his mother came out of the cave and understood the remaining treatises from the Buddhas. Because of his habit of observing the characteristics of footprints, he told his parents that he could identify thieves. Therefore, he was known as "Knowing Thieves." There, he asked his father, "Where is your birthplace?" His father replied, "It is the capital of the King of Varanasi." The son said, "Father, I would like to go to Varanasi with you and listen to the treatises with the wise ones." The father said, "Son, if you have the power to remove this stone blocking the door, then let's go." The son made great efforts and removed the stone, and they went to Varanasi together. They first offered auspicious wishes to the king and then said, "My son can identify thieves from footprints." The king showed respect to the son. Because he could identify all the thieves by their footprints, he said to the king, "These people should not be killed." After doing as he said, that place became free of thieves. One day, the king was riding a fine horse, accompanied by his retinue, and talking and laughing with his attendants,

The retinues of (someone) went to the garden where they resided, and then went to another place. In a secluded spot, a beautiful woman named Bhadra, the chief of the beautiful ones, was fast asleep, her clothes disheveled, wearing a pearl necklace. Seeing her, the king said to his attendant, "By the power of the merit of knowing footprints, even this pearl necklace of someone sleeping like this has not been stolen by others." The attendant became jealous and said, "O deity, you do not know the faults of knowing footprints, but instead praise its merits." The king said, "What are its faults?" The attendant said, "It is that he himself steals the property of others at night, and merely reveals that mark before the deity." The king, in order to demonstrate the power of knowing footprints, had his attendant take the pearl necklace of that beautiful woman, and then circled the king's city three times, and returned to his own palace, where he dug a hole under the lion throne and buried it. When the woman woke up, she told the king, grieving over the loss of her pearl necklace. Thereupon, the king confronted the attendant and said to the footprint expert, "This beautiful woman's priceless pearl necklace has been lost. Who took it?" The footprint expert found it, circled the city three times, returned to the palace, looked under the lion throne, and then looked at the king's face, laughing repeatedly. The king said, "What do you mean by laughing? Tell me!" The footprint expert said, "O deity! The thief who took the pearl necklace is no ordinary person." The king said, "Oh, then tell me!" The footprint expert said, "O deity, you should listen to a parable: When potters and others who live by the earth are crushed by collapsing earth, the earth from which plants and trees grow and which nourishes all things says, 'Today I have crushed you.' It is like that." Having said this, he said nothing more. The king told him to speak more clearly, and he said, "If you wish me to speak clearly, then please listen to another parable: When Brahmins perform fire offerings in the fire, and their hand is burned by a spark, they say, 'I burn and offer every day.'
