At that time, he saw all meditations as things that prevent arising, and he developed a fearless perception of all existence. He focused on stopping the flow of the non-abiding mind, and at the time of death, he did not enter the womb for ninety-six kalpas, but was always born miraculously. Furthermore, in the past, immeasurable eons ago, when the teacher was called Good Eyes, he saw the three realms as being oppressed by the faults of their own place. He thought, "Alas, wherever these sentient beings abide, they will be harmed. They have no protector and no guide. I will not abide in all actions, for if there is no abiding, there will be no movement." He realized that great compassion is attained from meditation on non-abiding in all dharmas, and he taught this to sentient beings, causing countless sentient beings to enter unobstructed wisdom and be liberated from the non-abiding nirvana. Furthermore, in the past, immeasurable eons ago, the Tathagata named Giver of Breath taught the Dharma to sentient beings, liberating them from old age and sickness, and making them fearless. That is, he is not attached to those who are attached, he is not hateful to those who are hateful, he is not ignorant to those who are ignorant, and he is not attached to meditations, the abodes of cessation, and the samadhis of gradual abiding. Thus, the mind is liberated and completely liberated. This is called the knowledge of liberation, and he taught the Dharma of the eight liberations in this way. At that time, the Blessed One himself was the king, named Subduer of All Enemies, who was the ruler of the three thousand great thousand world realms. Together with a large assembly of people and sixty thousand kings of realms, he went to the Tathagata, and the Buddha taught the king the Dharma of the eight liberations. The king filled the three thousand great thousand world realms with the seven precious things, offered them to the Buddha, and together with the kings of the realms, renounced his kingdom and went forth into ordination. There, those sixty thousand kings of the realms directly realized the eight liberations.

Except for that one, he heard the eight liberations, and although he did not abide in all existence, out of great compassion for sentient beings who are born, die, and transmigrate in existence, he remained in samsara for eighteen hundred million kalpas, and contemplated and strived for the benefit of sentient beings in samsara. The Blessed One said: 'The Bodhisattva, son of Maudgalyayana, who does not abide in all samadhis, will quickly attain unsurpassed enlightenment.' Furthermore, in the past, the Blessed One himself was born as a king named Sarvavid, and governed the kingdom with diligence. He had eighty-four thousand consorts, all of whom were beautiful and pleasing to the eye, with excellent color and radiant splendor, rising early and retiring late. Their forms were like goddesses, and their virtues were like those free from desire. King Sarvavid entered into samadhi amidst those eighty-four thousand women, and truly knew how to equally abide in the mind, as well as the distinctions of meditation, afflictions, and virtues. Having known all the distinctions of knowledge, afflictions, and virtues of those women, for those women who were weak in knowledge and strong in afflictions, he taught the Dharma that cultivates knowledge in order to subdue the afflictions. For those women who were weak in afflictions and strong in knowledge, he taught the Dharma in order to abandon whatever small afflictions they had. To women who practiced desire, he taught impurity and impermanence; to women who practiced hatred, he taught love and impermanence; to women who practiced ignorance, he taught dependent origination and impermanence; to women who practiced conceptualization, he taught mindfulness of breathing in and out and impermanence; to women who practiced signs, he taught signlessness and impermanence; to women who clung to self, he taught emptiness and impermanence; to women who craved existence, he taught desirelessness and impermanence. Thus, whatever affliction they practiced, he cut it off with its antidote. Therefore, those women who practiced desire cultivated meditation and practiced the path of Brahma.
