He praised and meditated. Furthermore, in a previous life, in the land of King Brahma-bestowed, in the forest of Varanasi, when the Blessed One himself was born as a hermit, the leader of five hundred ascetics, by the power of his loving-kindness, all who dwelt in that forest lived in mutual friendship and without harm. There, one ascetic became emaciated by a wind disease, and because his thought was for kingship, he saw it with his divine eye. He asked him what kind of disease it was, and also said, "The roots of this ascetic forest and so on cannot calm me, so I need livestock broth." He himself conjured up a livestock and said, "Kill this and drink the broth." Then he said, "Khenpo, this is contrary to the Dharma, it is not appropriate for an ascetic to live by (killing) sentient beings." The Bodhisattva said, "If you do not even eat the meat of a single livestock killed out of compassion for the sake of your own life, then if you become king, will it not be contrary to the Dharma if you kill livestock and strike innocent wild animals with weapons? Where will your compassion be at that time? Therefore, do not be pleased with kingship, the root of many faults and sufferings." Thus, he spoke of how the mind becomes defiled, and how one will again experience suffering in the lower realms and so on. Then he praised, saying, "Khenpo, you know my thoughts." Turning away from that thought, he said again, "How should I deal with this mind that is drawn to the realm of ascetic women?" He said, "The eyes, limbs, face, and so on of women appear beautiful, but when they are old, they are of an undesirable nature, they decay and are of an impure nature. Those who do not understand this way obtain a great deal of suffering from attachment." In this way, he taught the Dharma, and that ascetic went to another secluded place, and through the instructions of the guru, he attained the four dhyanas and the five superknowledges, and then returned, praising the great hermit and extolling him with words of gratitude. Furthermore, in the past, the minister of King Brahma-bestowed, the sons given by the robber, named Robber Son and Robber Peak, went to the forest, attained the five superknowledges, and by means of magical power, in the sky...

Those two practitioners were worshiped by the king and all people. Once, when the king went elsewhere, the king's daughter served them, but she was seduced by a bird infatuated with the robber's peak, and engaged in sexual activity, losing her miraculous powers. The elder brother, Robber Son, living in the forest, knew this and brought him back to his own abode, again endowing him with the four dhyanas and five superknowledges. Among them, Robber Son was the Bhagavan himself, and Robber Peak was the black elephant, who was also ordained but was tricked by his own wife and returned to lay life. The Bhagavan took him back, ordained him, and caused him to attain Arhatship. Again, in the distant past, beyond countless eons, the Bhagavan himself became a king named Savior of All Kings. He had sixty-eight thousand consorts, all like goddesses, loving, respectful, and devoted like mothers, endowed with virtues. While dwelling among them, he perfected the four dhyanas and, having entered into the fourth dhyana, arose from that samadhi. Beings became excessively attached to the five objects of desire and engaged in sinful actions, thus being born into the three lower realms. Even when reborn as gods and humans, they would become short-lived, and so on. Furthermore, he saw beings with long and short lives, noble and low birth, great and small majesty, abundant and meager resources, vast and limited wisdom, striving for the norm and striving to deviate from the norm, and so on. He thought to himself: This path is not in harmony with the land. I should lead these beings onto the path of manifest enlightenment. He generated compassion and wandered through villages, cities, and all places, using the power of the five superknowledges he had attained to encourage people to abandon the ten non-virtuous actions and practice the path of the ten virtuous actions. He dedicated and did not dedicate all roots of virtue to unsurpassed enlightenment. That king, after his body disintegrated, was born as Brahma in the Brahma world, and again was born as Great Brahma, and then died and transmigrated, being born together with the gods of clear light at the time of the destruction of the eon. Even when dwelling there, he...

He placed countless immeasurable sentient beings in the state of non-retrogression. Those beings were not born there either, they all dwelt in the absence of Dharma. By doing these hundreds of thousands of methods, they died and transmigrated from the Brahma world, and from among the gods of clear light, they again dwelt in the Brahma world. If they came into the human world among a hundred people, even if they did not become Buddhas, they would possess the five supernormal knowledges. If a Buddha appeared and resided, they would become attendants to those Bhagavats. By accumulating roots of virtue, the Buddhas, the Bhagavats, would reside in meditative absorption, and if there was ease, or if there was solitude, they would know that the Tathagata resided. Thus it was said. Furthermore, at the time of the Tathagata named Abode of Peace, whose lifespan was seventy billion trillion years, the Bhagavat himself was born as a Bodhisattva named Reverence for Abode of Peace. Abode of Peace, having attained insight and being overwhelmed by great compassion, with his mind attaining the arising of all meditative wisdom, through skillful means, neither disregarded Abode of Peace nor cultivated insight. He manifested miraculous powers and manifested a thousand emanations. For those beings whose minds were distracted by worldly things, he gathered them with generosity, established them in discipline, and taught the Dharma of the Buddhas. He thoroughly placed countless immeasurable sentient beings in the patience of this profound Dharma. Moreover, by long familiarization with compassion, meditation, and the wisdom of omniscience, he thoroughly placed them in the six perfections, and those beings soon became Buddhas in the completely pure Buddha-fields, and liberated countless sentient beings from suffering. The Bhagavat taught: Therefore, I have perfected the six perfections by familiarizing myself with meditation. Thus it was said. Moreover, when he was born as a king named Manifest Joy in the Variety of the World, he renounced his kingdom and lived in the forest practicing meditation, and previously he pleased those who entered into meditation separately, thereby knowing that the arising of meditative wisdom was attained. Then he pleased those who possessed meditation separately with worldly food. Furthermore, in the past, beyond countless eons, there was a sage named Unobstructed Glory.
