and proceeded, beating various musical instruments. People looked at the prince, marveling and offering blessings, feeling happy. Due to the force of previous habits, seeing many scenes of celebration, he thought to himself: Alas! Worldly afflictions! Abodes are unstable, unpleasant, and changing. Even the splendor of this lotus will eventually become unstable. How amazing are those who live like this, those who are fearless! All paths are blocked by the Lord of Death, yet they enjoy themselves without worry. Old age, sickness, and death are harmful enemies, powerful and immeasurable, clearly existing. If the next life is destined to decline, who would find joy in this? Huge clouds, lightning flashing like golden necklaces, and the roaring of the great ocean. Great rain falls, with great force, gathering together, but eventually dissipating. Observing the impermanent nature of the world and its inhabitants in this way, he no longer felt joy in those sights, so he returned to his own dwelling. He requested his father, the king, to go to the forest for asceticism. The king, out of love for his son, was very unhappy and cried, saying: My only son, why should we abandon you? Do you doubt me, or have you misunderstood, or is there some other harm? Tell me, and I will eliminate it for you. The Bodhisattva said: My beloved father, how could I doubt you? There is no other harm either. I am afraid of death, so I think this way. I do this because there is no way to prevent death. And so on, he explained in detail the various faults of death. The king said: If that is the case, and the fear of the Lord of Death cannot be prevented, then what is the use of embracing the Dharma and going to the forest? Will the Lord of Death not come to your forest? Will not practitioners living in the forest die? Since everyone will die anyway, there is no use in leaving home and going to the forest. The Bodhisattva said: Living in the forest or at home, doing evil or practicing the Dharma, everyone will die in the same way. But in the forest, one can practice the Dharma, and even if those who practice the Dharma die, they will not experience the pain of sorrow, die

one will also go to a good place. In a household, it is difficult to practice Dharma due to the defilements of many faults. If one does what is not Dharma, great sorrow will arise at the time of death, and after death, one will also go to a bad rebirth. After the king heard these detailed accounts, he also agreed. Thus, he abandoned the enviable wealth of the kingdom like discarding grass, and went to the forest of asceticism, practicing the four meditations and the four immeasurables, and also placed worldly people in them. When his life came to an end, he was born in the Brahma realm. Therefore, the mind of meditation is accomplished through the path of non-attachment to the qualities of desire. Therefore, one should rejoice in meditation that is non-attached and dwells alone in solitude. Furthermore, in the past, this Bhagavan was a great figure of the Brahmin caste, respected by the king, wealthy, and loved by worldly people as if he were a god. He was proficient in various rituals and possessed a reputation for being learned. Due to the power of past habits, he did not like household life and wanted to go forth into the forest, so he shaved his head, wore robes, and went forth. His wife also went forth. The wife also wanted to follow him, but he said to her, "You cannot live in the forest of asceticism, it is better to live with other ordained women." He said this three times, but because she was deeply devoted to him, she followed him anyway. Gradually, they went to a pleasant and secluded monastery forest, settled there, and meditated. One afternoon, the Bodhisattva was meditating, and the woman was not far away, her body radiating like a goddess, meditating as if receiving instructions. Then, the king of that country went to the forest in the spring, came to the Bodhisattva, and after a pleasant conversation, sat nearby. The king saw the woman, and his heart was filled with desire, thinking, 'Although this is his wife, I will take her away.' So he began to observe whether this person possessed the qualities of asceticism, thinking, 'If he possesses qualities, he cannot be despised.' If beings are controlled by desire...
