Then, embracing his son, he said: "Behaving uprightly, diligently practice your own Dharma, and I also promise to be your student." Then, King Brahma-given said to the ministers: "Wise ones, if this mute youth does not renounce, what will happen? He will become a king of the gods. What will happen to your sons? They will become servants of that god. If he renounces, why don't your sons renounce?" The words of the god were thus finished. At that time, in a place not far from Varanasi, there lived a loving sage, full of compassion for all beings. The mute youth, with five hundred attendants, with great wealth, renounced at that sage's place, and striving diligently to receive his teachings, he manifested the five superknowledges. Then, at another time, when that sage passed away, the mute youth cremated him with various fragrant woods and performed offerings. He also gave teachings to the five hundred attendant children, and they also attained the five superknowledges through effort. At that time, the mute youth, having abandoned the kingdom, in the forest manifested the qualities of meditation, and he was the Blessed One himself, having become a Bodhisattva. Furthermore, in a previous life, when the Blessed One himself was an outsider teacher named Beautiful Eyes, he was also free from attachment to desires, possessed of miraculous powers, and taught the inexhaustible and extremely pure Dharma to hundreds of thousands of retinues. All those who were taught by him were mostly born in the Brahma world, and some were born as noble gods and humans. Then, the teacher Beautiful Eyes attained the second dhyana. Just like the teacher Beautiful Eyes, the Brahmin's son Jomjye and the elephant driver were also similar to him. Furthermore, in a previous life, the Blessed One himself was an outsider teacher named Mute, who possessed miraculous powers and was free from attachment to desires, teaching five hundred Brahmin youths. Then, at another time, that teacher thought, why haven't these children attained the five superknowledges?

Thinking that if it is like this, because they carry too many scrapers, tree bark pills, staffs, ladles, and other utensils, and they diligently engage in compounding herbs and the roots of utpala flowers, they have many things to do. Thinking that if I don't discipline them strictly, it will be difficult to separate from them. That Bodhisattva, being skilled in taming, wanting to properly settle the Brahmin boys, said, 'Except for one Brahmin boy who can provide me with roots and fruits, and the one who observes the fifteenth-day fast, none of you should come!' The boys thus established internal rules. At that time, the teacher, the mute, saw a deer from afar and said, 'The deer has come, good, come here! Deer, you and I are the same, content with just filling our bellies.' He also said, 'Here some are not like that, they are very diligent in compounding herbs and the roots of utpala flowers.' The Brahmin boys thought, 'It seems the teacher has perfected asceticism, actually talking to a deer.' So they went to the teacher, prostrated and sat down, but the teacher did not say anything. Then, they thought, 'The teacher doesn't talk to people, but talks to deer, it seems the teacher has perfected asceticism.' And so they left. After that, an ascetic with the conduct of a deer went to where the teacher, the mute, was. The teacher saw him from afar and said, 'Ascetic with the conduct of a deer, you have come, good, come here! You and I are the same, carrying only one scraper, one pill, one staff, and one ladle. You and I are content with just filling our bellies. Here some are not like that, they carry many scrapers and diligently engage in compounding herbs and so on.' After that, the Brahmin boys thought, 'The teacher is thus scolding greed and praising contentment, in reality the teacher is disciplining us!' So they threw the excess things from the pills to the ladles into the Ganges River, and then went to where the teacher was, and did just that. They purified their minds and bodies, acted according to the Dharma, went to the teacher, prostrated and sat down. That teacher, knowing their thoughts and nature,
