The chapter of seeking. In the past, there was a king named Brahma-gift (Tshangs-byin), a king of Dharma. When the Bhagavan was born as the son of that king's attendant, his name was given as 'One with webbed hands and feet' because his hands and feet were connected by webs. Later, a younger brother was born to him who did not have webbed hands and feet, and he was named 'One without webbed hands and feet.' The elder brother, the one with webs, thought, 'It would not be right for me to become an attendant,' so he went to his father and asked to be ordained. The father said, 'Why do you want to be ordained? Why would you be ordained when the position of attendant, who performs offerings and sacrifices, will come into your hands?' The son said, 'It is easy to live in the forest; a wise man should not engage in killing and cutting for the sake of a kingdom.' He spoke these verses. The father, knowing that he was determined, granted his request. So he went into the midst of the ascetics, was ordained, and single-mindedly meditated, developing the five superknowledges. The younger brother, the one without webbed hands and feet, went to another country to seek secret mantras. On a southern cliff, there lived a Brahmin who thought, 'I have a daughter, and I will not give her away for the sake of lineage or wealth. I will give her to whoever learns the four Vedas.' The one without webbed hands and feet traveled around and read the Vedas with that Brahmin. In a short time, he became skilled in the four Vedas, and the Brahmin gave him his daughter. The Brahmin's son and daughter were sleeping on the roof when a fan fell down. The daughter stretched out her hand like an elephant's trunk and picked it up. He was frightened when he saw this. Also, when the butter lamp was about to go out, she stretched out her hand like an elephant's trunk and revived it. He was frightened and did not engage in joyful activities with her. The daughter asked him, 'Why do you not indulge freely with me?' The young man said, 'Have I ever seen anyone indulge with the Lord of Death?' The daughter said, 'Son of a king, do not be afraid. She will not harbor resentment towards the household.' The young man said, 'I must understand this.' The daughter sat shyly, waiting to fall asleep. The young man pretended to be asleep. The daughter went into the realm of the formless ones. The young man also slowly followed after her.

He went away, and seeing those embodied beings with their hair disheveled and looking terrifying, he was frightened and turned back. Without saying anything, he went to the Khenpo's (abbot) presence and said, "It is like this." The Khenpo said, "If that is so, also take the girl." He said, "Khenpo, I am afraid of her, she is an embodied being." He asked, "Why?" Without saying anything, he left. That Brahmin asked the girl, "Will you not protect the household either?" The girl said, "Father, what are you saying?" The boy said, "He says you are an embodied being." The girl said, "Father, I am not an embodied being, he slandered me and left." That embodied being, completely entangled with anger towards him, transformed her limbs and eyes, went to his path, and sat in front of him, saying, "You son of a leftover eater, I told you not to say anything to anyone, but you spoke to my father. Now I will inflict a great punishment on you." And she began to harm him. He, frightened, cried out loudly, "I prostrate to the noble one with webbed feet!" When he said it three times, a deity who was very fond of the one with webbed feet said, "Noble one, your younger brother has become harmed and threatened, please consider him." Then, through miraculous power, he went to his side and said, "Do not harm this girl, what wrong has she done to you?" The embodied being said, "This person said to my father that I am an embodied being, so I will eat this person, you leave!" The Drangsong (ascetic) said, "This ogress is miserly, because of the quarrel, please let him go!" She said, "Noble one, he must be released with a vow, if he becomes ordained." The Drangsong said, "Release this ogress, and I will have him ordained." Having said that, he had him ordained, and by giving him instructions, through diligence, he achieved the five kinds of clairvoyance. At that time, the younger brother was a nomadic herder with a lineage of hand-held transmission, and that embodied being at that time was this blue-green skinned girl. Even in the present time of the Buddha, this nomadic herder with a lineage of hand-held transmission was liberated from being given as food to a yaksha, and the blue-green skinned girl was liberated from bondage and placed in the fruit of non-returning." Furthermore, in the past, in Vārāṇasī (ancient Indian city, modern-day Benares), there was a king named Brahma-given (Tshangs byin).
