Please give me seven days, and after I finish my work, I will do as you wish. He said, "Seven days is not acceptable; give me one day." He took the coins, went to where the Buddha was, prostrated, and offered everything he had. Listen to this sutra with all your heart. At that time, due to his dull faculties, even though he heard this sutra, he only remembered one four-line verse. Namely: When the Tathagata passes into Nirvana, all cycles of existence are completely cut off. Whoever listens attentively with a focused mind will always attain immeasurable bliss. He memorized these lines and returned to the sick man's house. Even though he cut off three ounces of flesh each day, he did not falter because he kept this verse in mind. He did not miss a single day, and after giving like that for a month, the patient recovered, and his body returned to its former state. He was delighted and generated the mind of unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. If the power of just one verse is so great, what need is there to mention the complete sutra? Seeing that this sutra had such benefits, he generated even greater resolve and made the aspiration to attain the enlightenment of a Buddha in the future, and that his name would be Shakyamuni. Then, he also taught it to many gods and humans. Furthermore, in the past, countless eons ago, the Bhagavan himself was called Great Sage Supreme, dwelling in forests and mountains, possessing the five superknowledges, and always abiding in loving-kindness and compassion. He thought to himself: "My abiding in loving-kindness does not bring joy to sentient beings, nor can it pacify the three poisons and other afflictions accumulated from limitless eons, nor can it generate the noble right view." He also wondered, "From where does the noble right view arise?" He thought that hearing the sounds of others and one's own proper attention are the two causes. Therefore, in order to seek the well-spoken Dharma, he went to all the villages and cities, but he did not find the Dharma. Then, a deity from the realm of Mara went to him and said, "I hold one verse of a name spoken by the Buddha. If you

Having peeled off the skin from his body and dried it in the sun to make paper, having mixed his blood to make ink, and having made a pen from his bones, he said, "If you write a verse, I will give it." The hermit thought to himself, "When I wandered in samsara, for the sake of desires and wealth, even if my body was cut into pieces by kings, enemies, and executioners, I did not do anything for any sentient being. Now, with this meaningless body, I will be able to obtain the Dharma, which is a great gain for me." He rejoiced and was delighted. Then, he generated the perception of the deity as his teacher, and with a sharp weapon, he peeled off the skin from his body and dried it in the sun to make paper. He mixed the blood that flowed from his body into ink. He took out bones and made them into pens, and then he folded his palms towards the deity and requested him to reveal the verse. At that moment, the deity of the demonic realm saw the great hermit's such respectful pursuit of the Dharma and felt ashamed, and immediately disappeared. The great hermit, realizing that he had disappeared, thought, "Even though I have not heard the verse, the root of virtue of making paper, ink, and pen like this out of respect for the Dharma will not be wasted or deceive me. However, with my unwavering sincerity, with a compassionate heart for all sentient beings, disregarding body and life, like this, making skin into paper, etc., by the truth of reverence for the Dharma and the words of truth, I pray that the great masters who preach and teach the Dharma in this world and others will show themselves to me and allow me to hear the Dharma." As soon as he spoke, at that very moment, from the direction below, passing thirty-two Buddha fields from this Buddha field, in a world called Immaculate, the Tathagata named King Renowned as Immaculate Light, who dwells and teaches the Dharma, understood the great hermit's extraordinary intention and also saw that he had ripened the sentient beings of Jambudvipa. Then, he led five hundred Bodhisattvas together to the hermit's presence, pervading with great light, and a great rain of flowers fell. All the branches, leaves, fruits, and flowers of the trees in that forest...
