The half verse spoken by the Buddhas is: Alas! All conditioned things are impermanent, they are of the nature of arising and ceasing. Having said this, he went to him and with a terrifying form, his eyes glared in all four directions. When the ascetic heard this half verse, it was like finding a lost friend at night on a very terrifying cliff; like a long illness being cured by medicine; like encountering a ship after falling into the ocean; like encountering cool water when very thirsty; like escaping from the pursuit of enemies; like attaining liberation after a long period of diligent effort; like rain falling on a field after a great drought; like a guest returning from a long journey, he arose from his seat with great joy, raised his hair with his hand, and looked in all four directions, thinking: Who is it that speaks this verse? But he saw nothing but a rakshasa, and said: Who is it that opens the door of liberation in this way, proclaims the thunder of the Buddha's voice, and awakens those who are asleep in samsara? Who is it that shows the taste of unsurpassed bodhi to those who are tormented by famine in samsara, guides countless beings drowning in the ocean of samsara with a great ship, and becomes medicine for the many beings who are afflicted by the disease of afflictions? Hearing this half verse, like a half moon causing a lotus to gradually open, my mind is awakened. At that time, he saw nothing but a rakshasa, and thought: Did these say these words? And again he thought: These people are terrifying in appearance and very ugly, whoever hears this verse should be free from ugliness and fear. Just as it is impossible for a lotus to grow from fire, or for cold water to appear in the sunlight, how could these people speak such words? And again he thought: I am very ignorant, if this rakshasa met the Buddhas of the past and heard this half verse, it is also possible. Therefore, I should ask this rakshasa about the meaning of this half verse. Then he said: Well done! Great man, from whom did you hear the teachings of the Buddhas of the past? The meaning of this is the Buddhas of the three times.

are the paths of those. The Tirthikas, whose minds are obscured by worldly beings' views, do not hear this meaning spoken by the Transcendent One, the one with the ten powers. When asked about these, they said: Brahmin, do not ask that way. I have passed many days without finding food, and what I said before was also because I was tormented by hunger and thirst, speaking like a drunkard, not while being mindful. I flew into the sky and went between unpleasant sounds and the realm of the gods, but I did not find food, so I said that. The Brahmin said to the Rakshasa: Great being, if you can completely speak this verse, I vow to be your student for life. Please completely speak the words and meaning of this verse. The Rakshasa said: You are exceedingly wise, greatly valuing your own benefit, but you do not consider my thoughts. I am tormented by hunger and do not want to speak. The Brahmin asked: What food do you eat? He said: Do not ask that way, for if I speak, many people will be afraid. The Brahmin said: In this desolate place, there are no people, and I am not afraid of you, so why can't you speak? The Rakshasa said: I eat raw human flesh and drink warm blood. I have little merit, so even when I search for such food, I cannot find it. Although there are many people in the world, all are endowed with merit and are protected by the gods, so I have no power to kill and devour them. The Brahmin said: If you completely speak this verse with its meaning, I will give you my body. Even if tigers, wolves, and others devour many bodies, they cannot generate even a single strand of merit. For the sake of unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, I will transform this meaningless body into a body with meaning. The Rakshasa said: Who would believe that you would completely give up your body for the sake of eight syllables? The Brahmin said: Just as someone exchanges an earthenware pot for a jeweled vessel, if one obtains a vajra-like body with this meaningless body, why would one not give up the body? I have Brahma, Indra, and the Four Great Kings as witnesses. Furthermore, the Bodhisattvas and the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, of the ten directions' realms also bear witness.
