A crocodile seized a man, and seeing him wailing, (the Bodhisattva) rescued him from the water. The man said to him, "My life was saved by you, what shall I do to repay you? Please command." (The Bodhisattva) said, "If you don't tell anyone about me, that will be repaying me. Even eating my flesh is acceptable, and this body has other temptations as well. Therefore, you should protect my merits, because a person who is stingy to friends will never be happy." The man also said, "I will do that." Then he prostrated and left. The queen of the king of that country had a dream, and the diviner interpreted it as she dreamed that a radiant deer king was sitting on the throne, teaching the Dharma to everyone, including the king. She told the dream to the king, and in order to find that deer, the king said to the hunters, "Whoever hears (news of the deer) will be rewarded with forty countries and extremely beautiful women." The previous man, because of his desire for these, said to the king, "I saw it." That man acted as a guide, and the king went in that direction with an army. The army surrounded the edge of the forest. The man and the king entered the forest from a small path, and the man pointed out the deer to the king, and the deer's penis broke off and fell to the ground. At that time, the king wanted to catch the deer, so he drew his bow and went forward. The deer cried out at the edge of the forest, thinking, "If (the army) has already surrounded all the edges, it is useless to run away." So he spoke in human language, "King of men, please dispel this doubt for a moment. Who said that I live in this dense forest?" The king was surprised and pointed the arrow at the man. The Bodhisattva recognized him and told in detail the past events of how this man should not have acted in this way. The king asked the man, "Is this true?" The man was ashamed and replied, "Yes." The king was angry about this, rebuked him and prepared to shoot an arrow, at which point the Bodhisattva stood in the middle and said, "Great king, what do you want to do by killing him? He has come driven by a great enemy, and has already been destroyed by a bad reputation. Because of the lack of merit, he will also be destroyed in the next life. Please have compassion and show the way, and I will accept what you say with the top of my head." The king praised the deer with respectful words and invited him to the palace.

From then on, he preached the Dharma, and all the people in the city, including the king, ministers, and consorts, believed and practiced the Dharma, and also gave all the beasts and birds the protection of fearlessness. Also, in the past, when the Blessed One himself was transformed into a hermit named "Practice Ground," the evil demon, with the bravery of insulting five hundred people, followed that hermit continuously for five hundred years, insulting him day and night. He spoke unpleasant words at all times, in all actions such as walking, sitting, and lying down, speaking harsh and evil languages. However, that hermit looked at them with loving-kindness, without generating even a single thought of sin, but rather regarded them as virtues, thinking, "I am practicing unsurpassed Bodhi for the sake of taming all difficult-to-tame beings, I should first liberate myself and them from suffering." In this way, he abided in loving-kindness. Also, in the past, after being transformed into a heretical hermit named "Power of Patience," he vowed, "I will not generate hatred towards sentient beings." At that time, a demon named "Evil Intent" wanted to destroy and prevent that hermit's Dharma of patience, so he sent a thousand people skilled in insults, using harsh words, untrue accusations, and various unspeakable evil words, constantly insulting him for eighty-four thousand years in all occasions such as walking, sitting, lying down, eating, etc. When that hermit entered the city, people poured urine on his head and into his bowl, splashed it on his body and clothes, and beat his head with a whisk. Even so, there was no hatred or resentment in his heart, nor did he speak of any faults, did not look with hateful eyes, nor did he say words like "What fault do I have?" but rather generated loving-kindness. Seeing that the power of that hermit could not be destroyed, he generated a very pure thought, confessed his faults, and made offerings and served him. At that time, he had no attachment to those people either. After transforming in this way, they all generated faith, confessed their sins, followed the hermit Power of Patience, and generated the unsurpassed perfect Bodhicitta.

Now, those who have manifested as Buddhas and abide in the Dharma of the Buddha have all long ago become Buddhas and have completely passed into nirvana. At that time, the demon who delighted in abuse and commanded a thousand armies was Devadatta. Furthermore, enduring immeasurable harms such as these without concern, and practicing austerities for the sake of the Dharma, these arise from the occasion of seeking the Dharma; enduring profound meanings with wisdom, these arise from the occasion of wisdom. Taking these as examples, one should understand that patience has reached the inconceivable perfection. This is the chapter on patience. Moreover, in the past, beyond countless immeasurable eons, in the eon called Joyful, in a world called Peaceful, when the Tathagata named Immaculate Appearance appeared, that Buddha-field was endowed with immeasurable bliss and prosperity, and the lifespan of the people at that time was eighty-four thousand years. There, there was a prince named Wealth Glory, who was excellent in form and arrogant due to the pleasures of enjoyment, and he did not go to the Buddha nor did he serve him. That Tathagata thought, "This prince Wealth Glory, if his roots of virtue ripen, he has the potential to awaken to unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, but he is attached to enjoyment and pleasure, and arrogantly does not come to the Tathagata. If I constantly urge him, he might come to the Tathagata." Then, he said to the eighty-four thousand Bodhisattvas, "Noble sons, among you, who can tirelessly go to the door of the house of the youth Wealth Glory for eighty-four thousand years, abandoning all happiness and accepting all suffering, and not even receive a kind word or a true word, but also endure scolding and hear harsh, unpleasant words, and still be happy?" He urged them in this way. At that time, not even one of those eighty-four thousand Bodhisattvas was happy. That Bhagavan took the staff of entreaty and entreated two or three times, but no one accepted. At that time, our teacher, the Bhagavan, was himself that diligent Bodhisattva.
