Even excellent medicines like Dan Sa cannot cure it. If one obtains the tusk of the great elephant king who can pierce mountains, and uses its bristles as bedding, and adorns the body with the pearls on the tusk, then this disease will be cured; nothing else will help. Hearing this, the king thought, "This consort must have seen or heard of this in a previous life; I must do as she says." So he summoned a hunter and said, "Go and take the tusk of that elephant, and I will give you great wealth." The hunter said, "If I can do it, I will." The consort said, "I know how to please that great elephant. Dressed as a renunciate, strike its vital spot with a poisoned arrow." As instructed, the hunter went, and after a while, as he was walking in the forest, he was seen by a herd of elephants, who became suspicious and told the elephant king. The Bodhisattva said, "There is no need to be suspicious. This one holds the banner of the Buddhas, symbolizing the path of shame and peace, so it is fitting to look." Then the hunter, hiding behind a tree, shot the elephant king with a poisoned arrow. Seeing his body covered in blood, the herd of elephants and a very kind female elephant were agitated and grieved, and they pulled out the arrow. The elephant king thought, "If I die, this herd of elephants will be without protection. If I have no anger towards this hunter and am of a kind disposition, then by that truth, may my poison be exhausted." As soon as he spoke, he was completely freed from the pain of being struck. Seeing that he had come back to life in this way, the hunter bowed down and told him the words of the queen. With a compassionate heart, the elephant pulled out his two tusks and gave them to him, and by the power of truth, two tusks grew again. The hunter took the two tusks and went to the king's palace, where the king gave the hunter wealth as a reward. Seeing the tusks, he felt remorse. The queen also truthfully told her lord how she had suffered from jealousy in a previous life, saying, "Alas! The elephant king of the forest, with his asceticism and peaceful mind, that jealous...

She uttered various lamentations, saying, "I am destroyed by an evil mind." The hunter said, "Queen, do not grieve. By the power of truth of that great being, you will live, your teeth will grow back, and you will manage your herd." Hearing these words, she was delighted. Again, in the past, in a mountain monastery on the bank of the river named Varanasi (ancient Indian place name), the Blessed One himself became a beautiful deer king, with a white belly and a black back, happily managing and dwelling with the deer herd. Another leader of a herd of deer, similar in appearance to him, was named Devadatta. One day, King Brahma-datta, with his army, came to the forest to hunt deer, and surrounded the deer with weapons. When the king was about to draw his bow, the deer king went forward and said to the king, "King, why kill all these deer at once? I will send you one deer each day." The king agreed, saying, "If that is true, then it is good, otherwise I will hunt all the deer." Having said this, the king left. The deer gathered together, and the leader of the herd said, "In order to avoid being killed all at once, we have agreed to send one deer to the king's kitchen each day." According to the orders of the two deer kings, one deer was sent each day for several days. Later, it was the turn of a pregnant doe to go to her death. She said to Devadatta, the leader of the deer herd, "I will surely give birth to a child tomorrow. I will go to die after giving birth to the child, not with it." Devadatta said, "Since it is your turn to go, who else should go in your place? You cannot disobey my command." Then he drove her away. That doe went to the other compassionate leader of the deer herd and said, "It is my turn to go, so when I give birth to the child tomorrow, please lick it with your tongue, let it suckle, and then entrust it to your sister. After that, I will go to die, please grant me permission to ask for the sake of protecting this child."
