The untimely heavy rain killed many birds and wild animals, and they wondered if the man would die, but asked how he didn't die. Then the man explained what had happened. Those people said, "Show us the cave where the bear is." The man said, "I won't go into the forest again." Those people promised to give him two-thirds of the bear's meat after it was killed. The man pointed out the cave where the bear lived. They set fire to the cave, and the bear, in panic and pain, died without regret or anger, contemplating the power of karma. They gave that two-thirds share of the meat to the lazy man who didn't help. Just as he was about to take it, both hands fell to the ground. Then other hunters also gave up their shares and dug a pit. There were amazing people there, and a king named Pure Giving (also translated as: Giving Purity) also went there. They took the bear's skin and said to the monks in a temple. There was an abbot Arhat there, who said, "This is not a bear, but a Bodhisattva of the Good Aeon, and should be venerated." The king and his retinue piled up fragrant wood, burned the bear's corpse, and built a stupa in that place, decorated with umbrellas and other ornaments, and made seasonal offerings. Therefore, all the actions done for it led to rebirth in higher realms. Furthermore, a poor woodcutter went into the forest to cut firewood. In that great forest, a Bodhisattva who had taken birth as a bear lived. The man was harassed by a tiger and accidentally climbed the tree where the bear lived. He was even more frightened when he saw the bear, but the bear took the man into its arms and treated him with kindness. The tiger, craving food, said to the bear, "Hey, great being, these black-headed people are ungrateful. Throw this one down, and I'll eat him and leave." Most other people would be kind to those who come seeking refuge, let alone Bodhisattvas, so the bear said, "This one has come to me for refuge, I will not abandon him." The tiger, craving flesh and blood, stayed there for a long time. The bear said, "I'm tired, you stay on the branch for a while, I need to rest." Because of fatigue, he fell asleep. The tiger said to the man:

pa. How long will you stay here? Why not throw the bear down and let it eat you and leave? Then you can leave in peace. The one without compassion thought: Rather than staying here, it would be better to throw this bear down. Thinking this, he threw the bear from the tree. The bear said: Alas, you of evil speech, why do you associate with evil friends? Saying this, it fell down and was killed by the tiger. The man heard this and thought: What benefit does this fellow want to share with me that he speaks like this? Because he was attached to this, he became deranged. His mind disturbed and crazed, he wandered everywhere, uttering from his mouth, "Alas, you of evil speech," and so on, as before. Even when his relatives led him away, he spoke in the same way. Those relatives then brought in mantra holders to perform exorcisms, and they asked monks, Brahmins, and friends. But they all spoke differently and did not know what to do. At that time, in a forest not far from Varanasi, there lived a hermit with five kinds of clairvoyance. The man's relatives led him to the hermit and told him what had happened. The hermit said: This sentient being is a sinner, this evil-natured one threw the benefit-bringing Bodhisattva in front of the tiger. That great being thought: I should teach him the Dharma. When he threw the Bodhisattva to the tiger, the Bodhisattva, with compassion, remembered each word from the ten verses, which was: "Alas, you of evil speech," and so on, that is what he said. A disciple of the hermit asked: Teacher, what are those verses like? The hermit said: Alas, alas, alas, woe is this world! Things that are not Dharma are unbearable. Do not let people gather together, for there are those who kill friends. One who kills a friend will not be happy at any time or place. Not on a seat, not on a path, not sitting, nor walking. Like this, the heart cries out in sorrow, whatever words are spoken to him, he burns those evil-minded sentient beings like a fire. Having done extremely unbearable deeds, that will make you feel the touch of suffering in the next world, you will not feel peace. You, more base than the base, crying out with an extremely unpleasant voice, shouting "Alas, alas," is a terrible suffering.

Great fruit is obtained. What did that cruel one, who does non-virtuous deeds, do to cause this? He does not exclude people from the assembly, he has the act of killing friends. Knowing that the mind that cannot tolerate the destruction of the Dharma is sinful. Remember the sins you committed against the bear, and what you did to the tiger. How is it that you, with your evil mind, do not know how to treat a friend? By killing, one obtains killing, and the vengeful see all grudges. When the great fear of the tiger arose, you served him for a long time, and even when he was sleeping, you protected him, but you did not protect him. Deceiving a friend is a great offense, so say those who speak the Dharma. After the body of the evil-minded is destroyed, he will be born in all the hells. Thus he spoke. That bear was the Buddha Bhagavan himself, and that man was Devadatta himself, so it is said. Even when a Bodhisattva is born as an animal and experiences the fear of death, he can still show such Dharma, making the path and non-path clear to all sentient beings. What need is there to mention the teaching of the Dharma after becoming a Buddha? Having known his qualities in this way, one should respect him. Again, in the past, during the time of King Brahma-dana, a man went into the forest to get wood and was chased by a lion and fell into a pit. The lion also chased him and fell into the pit. Also, a snake was frightened by a mouse and fled, and a hawk chased it to eat it. All of them fell into the pit together due to the power of karma. When they wanted to kill each other with harmful intentions, the lion said: I can defeat all of you. However, having heard unbearable suffering, this is not the time to harm each other, so stay put. At that time, a hunter happened to go to that area and looked into the pit. They cried out in panic, "Protect us!" The hunter first pulled out the lion, and the lion touched the hunter's foot saying: "I will repay your kindness, but there is a black-headed man living here, who is ungrateful, do not save him." Having said this, he left. Soon, the hunter gradually pulled them all out. Another time, the lion
