Then, the Rakshasa praised him, saying, "Other people, when they fall into my power, lose their composure and are terrified. You, however, are so brave and fearless, it seems you have no fear of death." The prince said, "Even if one strives with utmost effort, what good does it do to fear death, which is inevitable? Furthermore, those who have not done good but have committed evil will experience fear at the time of death because of that. I do not remember having done any evil that I regret, and having abided in the Dharma and performed generosity and other virtuous deeds, my mind is at ease, so I do not fear death. Therefore, do with me as you please, whether you want to offer me gifts, give me alms, or eat me." After the prince spoke, the Rakshasa developed faith, his eyes filled with tears, and he forgot his evil thoughts, gazing at the prince. He said, "Noble prince, who would knowingly harm someone like you? Please also show me those excellent teachings, and I desire to listen. The power of your well-spoken words has made me feel remorse for my own evil deeds." The Bodhisattva prince thought to himself that the Rakshasa's time under the curse of the sage was complete, and the time for him to enter the Dharma had arrived, so he should be guided towards the Dharma. He then said, "Since you desire the Dharma, you must have conduct that is in accordance with it. Therefore, sit on a low seat, cultivate the splendor of gentleness, look with joyful eyes, as if drinking the nectar of words. Generate respect and pay homage with one-pointed devotion, with a pure heart of faith. Just as a sick person listens to the doctor's instructions, listen to the Dharma with reverence." Then, the Rakshasa, Barefoot, spread his upper garment on a high stone slab and placed the Bodhisattva on it. Looking at his face, he said, "Great Bodhisattva, please speak!" The Bodhisattva, with a clear voice, recited the verse he had heard before: "Noble one, even if I meet you only once, in whatever way you wish, without needing to cultivate familiarity, I will become very steadfast." Barefoot Rakshasa, having heard that, said, "Excellent!" He shook his head, making a 'se-gol' sound, expressing joy, and said to the Bodhisattva, "Please say it again!" The Bodhisattva recited the second verse: "The noble ones cannot be deceived by anyone. Alas!"

One should cultivate virtue in this way. Approaching virtue, even without intentionally seeking it, one becomes covered in its dust of merit. The Rakshasa said: Virtue has been well spoken, you should offer it in every way. Wealth has also been sent to its proper place, and after striving, may accomplishment descend. Then he spoke again. The Bodhisattva said: The king's chariot, adorned with precious gold, and the body also becomes unsightly due to aging. But the Dharma of the holy ones does not age. Virtues are a stable foundation of qualities. The Rakshasa shook the bells, and I was satisfied by the rain of nectar. Then he spoke again. The Bodhisattva spoke the fourth verse: The distance between the sky and the earth is very long, the distance between the near and far shores of the ocean is also long, the distance between the mountains of the east and west is also long, the distance between ordinary people and the sacred Dharma is even longer. Then, that Rakshasa became very happy and respectful, and said to the Bodhisattva: In order to offer as a reward for hearing these four verses that are clear in meaning, I wish to offer four sacred things, so please ask for whatever you desire. The prince said: If you strive to make me lose my autonomy, then practicing virtue becomes inverted. How can you give sacred things to others? Even if I give permission for you to give sacred things, your mind will not be happy to give, so do not speak like that. Then, the Rakshasa felt a little ashamed and lowered his head, and said to the Bodhisattva: Please do not have such doubts. I will give up my life to offer those sacred things, please accept them. The Bodhisattva said: Enjoy the practice of truth, and abandon killing sentient beings. Release all these people who have been taken prisoner. Hero, you should completely abandon eating human flesh. Please give these four supreme sacred things. The Rakshasa said: I offer the first three sacred things to you, please ask for another fourth sacred thing. I cannot not eat human flesh, didn't you know that from before? The prince said: Didn't I say that you cannot give sacred things? If you do not abandon eating human flesh, how can you speak truthfully and not kill living beings? In that case, sacred things...
