། །The one who destroys the other world. Wise men, for the sake of kingship, Killing, binding, and beating, doing those things is not right. The king said: Young man, know this! You are my only son, beloved and agreeable, without any discord. If I die, I will unwillingly be separated from you. How can I let you leave while I am alive? The young man said: Father, if you allow it, then so be it. If you do not allow it, I will not eat or pay respects. Then, the young man Kashi Delight, from fasting for one day, fasted for two, three, four, five, and six days. At that time, the king said to the young man: Brahmacharya is difficult to practice, living alone in solitude with wild animals, living by what others give. For as long as you live, you must abandon all human games and joys, son, young man, be the crown prince, enjoy desires, and do charity and merit, he said, but the young man said nothing. Then, the king ordered the queen and the ministers to persuade the young man. They also said to the young man as before: You are very young, you only know happiness, you do not know suffering, it is difficult to live in solitude, but the young man said nothing. Then, the king urged, the sons of the ministers and the sons of the attendants who played with the young man, and other young men also said to him as before, but he said nothing. Then, those young men reported to King Brahma-given: May the gods know! What if the young man Kashi Delight dies? To renounce like this, is praised by the wise. If he likes it, he will live, he will be taken care of. If he is not happy there, and returns from the hermits, the son's home is the parents, where else can he go? The king said: Young men, if that is the case, then let it be allowed. Then, those young men said to Kashi Delight, it is allowed like this. Then, the body of the young man Kashi Delight was gradually nourished by the essence, and he came out of Varanasi (Vārāṇasī, modern Varanasi, India) and renounced among the hermits. That's it.

Now, through diligence, he became detached from attachment to desires. Having attained the Samadhi of Loving-kindness, due to the power of that loving-kindness which possessed affection for all sentient beings, even fierce wild animals became familiar with the dwelling place and caused no harm. Therefore, his name became known as 'The Patient Ascetic,' and he dwelt together with five hundred attendants. At one time, King Brahma-given died and placed Strife-born on the throne. He allowed the kingdom to be ruled by means of Dharma and non-Dharma. The Patient Ascetic said: Abbot, my body is sustained by food and drink, so the monastery's medicine is of no use to me. Therefore, I wish to reside at the edge of the village. He said: Son, whether you reside in the village or the monastery is fine, but ascetics guard their senses. Go and make a hut of leaves near Varanasi and dwell there. Having thus received permission from the Abbot, he gradually sought a dwelling place and wandered until he dwelt in a quiet part of his father's pleasure garden. At another time, in the season of Soga, when the flowering trees were in bloom and the pleasure garden was filled with the sounds of geese, cuckoos, wagtails, and other birds, King Strife-born, together with his retinue of consorts, went to the garden. While King Strife-born was asleep in the garden, the women who delighted in flowers and fruits began to wander about among themselves. After a while, they saw the Patient Ascetic, who lived at the edge of the garden, behaving with careful conduct. With faithful hearts, they prostrated to him and sat around him. The ascetic also taught them the Dharma. After a while, the king awoke from his sleep and, not seeing his retinue of consorts, he became angry and drew his sword. He searched for his retinue and saw them sitting near the ascetic. Knowing that the king was angry, the retinue of consorts became frightened and scattered. Strife-born said to the ascetic: O you insider, who are you? I am the Patient One. The king said: Have you attained the formless four concentrations and the four meditations, and so on? He said: I have not attained them. The king said: If you have not attained those qualities, then you are just an ordinary person, with women.

How can one believe that someone lives in a secluded, sheltered place? What do you do, always staying here? The hermit said: I practice patience. King Victorious drew his sword and said: You practice patience? I will test how patient I am with strife. Saying this, he cut off both hands of the hermit. He asked: Who are you? He replied: I am the patient one, the one who speaks of patience. Again, he cut off his feet and asked him, and again he said: I am the one who speaks of patience. Thus, he cut off his major and minor limbs. That hermit said: If to my body, With a cut the size of a sesame seed, Even if the body is cut into hundreds of millions of pieces, Even if scattered on the ground, I will not abandon patience. Because I am always accustomed to the loving, virtuous mind, Towards beings like a beloved child, I am not willing to abandon that patience. Having said this, The king, because of a woman, took up weapons and, with an afflicted mind, repeatedly cut off my major and minor limbs. Likewise, with this virtuous root of my patience and determination, May I destroy my own afflictions, and when I awaken to unsurpassed enlightenment, may I till him again and again with the sword of wisdom, first cutting off his afflictions. Thus he made a prayer. At that time, the earth shook in six ways, and five hundred attendants flew into the sky and arrived before him, and seeing the teacher in such suffering, they asked: Has your mind of patience not diminished? The one who speaks of patience spoke of the way his mind had not changed. Then, the god who was delighted with the patient one said: If this evil king harms the innocent hermit in this way, I will send down lightning and kill this king and his retinue today. The hermit said: Even if someone separates my body, legs, hands, And nose, and does cruel things, I do not want even a little sin for him, What need is there to speak of innocent beings? Saying this, he did not allow him to be killed. Then, the god of Varanasi (瓦拉纳西) sent plagues, rats, and parrots, making that place desolate, and the gods did not send rain, causing most people to die.
