Having asked if he had renounced and become ordained. The Great Being showed the Dharma with his body, not with his speech. He showed miracles such as burning and emitting electricity, which made them believe. Then, the merchant chief, Savior of All, satisfied the eighty thousand merchants with a mixed collection, saying, "Do this, and the fruit will ripen." They did various things for him. Those merchants were also placed on the five foundations taught by the merchant chief. Thus, the captain, Savior of All, was the Bhagavan himself. Also, in a past time, in this Jambudvipa, in the country of Varanasi, the son of a Brahmin named Hari, named Good Seeker, was the Bhagavan himself at that time. His brother, named Bad Seeker, was Devadatta. Those two brothers set out on the road, each with five hundred attendants, to take jewels from the ocean. Because the road was long, they had not even reached a place seven days away when their provisions ran out and they were near death. Good Seeker and the others were all distressed and made offerings to the gods and so on. There, they saw a good, flourishing tree from afar and went there, and there was also a good spring. Everyone drank there. They said, "This is a sign that we have made offerings to the gods." There, a god appeared and said, "Cut off a branch of this flourishing tree and all desires will be fulfilled." When one branch was cut off, a delicious drink appeared. When another was cut off, all kinds of food with a hundred flavors appeared, and everyone ate to their fill. When another branch was cut off, various kinds of clothes appeared. When another was cut off, various kinds of precious jewels appeared, and all the loads were filled. Then, Bad Seeker and all the others also arrived there and saw that various jewels were coming from the branches that had been cut off earlier. Thinking, "If we cut off the root of this tree, there will be many more precious jewels," they intended to dig up the root of the tree. Good Seeker was not happy and said, "We are poor and near death, and this tree has saved us, do not cut this tree." But they did not listen. Good Seeker did not want to see this, so he went ahead. After that, Bad Seeker and the others cut off the root of that tree, and then five hundred ogres appeared and ate all the merchants, including Bad Seeker and the others. ༈ North

Bodhisattvas, even if they give up their entire body, always protect the words they have spoken to sentient beings and will not deceive them. In the past, countless eons ago, the Bhagavan became a lion named "Lion Without Damaged Limbs." He followed after loving-kindness for all sentient beings, eating roots, leaves, fruits, and flowers, and lived in a mountain cave that was difficult to enter. There, two monkeys lived, and after some time, they had two children, entrusting them to the lion. The monkey couple went to forage for food. At that time, a vulture king named "Hair Knife" seized the two baby monkeys and flew in the sky above. The lion saw this and said in verse: Release those two children who have come to me for refuge. The vulture king said: King of beasts, if you abandon me, I will release them. Otherwise, even if you are angry, what can you do if I eat them and fly into the sky? The king of beasts said: I can be abandoned by you, eaten by you, but please release these two baby monkeys. If I protect the vow to enter Bodhi and do not lie, I am willing to give up my body for the sake of sentient beings. The vulture king saw such a wondrous sight and released the two baby monkeys, saying: King of beasts, do not abandon your body either, and then flew away. At that time, the monkey couple were Kashyapa Buddha and Bhadra-Kapilani of the Bhadrakalpa, Rahula and Ananda were the baby monkeys, and the virtuous mendicant was the vulture king Hair Knife at that time, so it is said. Again, in the past, when the Bhagavan and Dipamkara Buddha manifested as two of the most excellent Dharma-speaking youths in Jambudvipa, they renounced and lived alone in the forest. They were skilled in poetry and all treatises, and had attained meditation and miraculous powers. The king of hunting beasts, named Elephant, taught the Dharma to beings including sixty kotis of attendants and generated the mind of Bodhi. At that time, many greedy monks said to those two Dharma speakers: These are nihilistic heretics, they proclaim that the five skandhas do not exist from the beginning, and teach the Dharma that destroys karma and its results, kill them. They incited the king.
