What kind of inversion is this! Since I have merits, you should all follow me and become monks. Worldly friendships are mostly unstable like the behavior of dancers, without certainty. If one cannot abandon them with a firm mind, then with rational actions, in the forest of asceticism, with the principle that one should not obstruct with kinds of desires, lure them with extremely gentle words, go to the forest of asceticism oneself, and with diligence in virtuous deeds, perfect discipline and asceticism, thereby practicing meditation. In this way, even for a single word of a person who proclaims himself virtuous without having virtues, those who have virtues will not abandon it, let alone not allowing it to diminish after having obtained any virtue? Like this, proclaiming oneself virtuous with names such as monk, layperson, practitioner, realized one, etc., examine oneself, thinking that people expect this of me, I cannot deceive them. One must adorn oneself with those virtues, and feel ashamed until one possesses them, know that this is the conduct of a Bodhisattva. Again, in the past, in the city of Varanasi (ancient Indian place name, now Benares), there was a king named Brahma-given, who was rich and wealthy. There was a consort named Incomparable Mother, who was beautiful and beloved by the king. At that time, on the south side of the King of Mountains, the Snow Mountain, the Blessed One transformed into a peacock king named Golden Light. It had a graceful body and limbs, a jewel-like beak, and five hundred attendants following it. Once, the peacock king crowed over the city of Varanasi in the middle of the night, and the consort Incomparable Mother, who was staying on the roof, heard it and said to the king: Whose is this sound that is so pleasing and loving? The king said: Goddess, I have not seen it either, but I have heard that there is a peacock king named Golden Light on the south side of the Snow Mountain, and I have heard that its sound is beautiful and pleasing. The consort said: Please bring that peacock king here. The king said: How can one see that which flies in the sky, consort

Then (she) said: If I do not see the Peacock King, I will die. The king, having developed affection for the unparalleled queen, said: I will stop hunting and bird-catching, and stay for a while. Then he said to the hunters and bird-catchers: You capture that Peacock King with nets, and then come here. If you can catch it, that's good, but if you can't, all of you will lose your lives. Then those hunters and bird-catchers, fearing for their lives, took bird nets and traps, and went to the south side of the snow mountain, where they spread nets and set traps in the place where the Peacock King lived, but wherever the Peacock King looked, the nets broke and the traps were cut off, and even after seven days of exhaustion, they could not catch the Peacock King. Then the Peacock King felt compassion for them and said: You who live on grain, why are you staying in this place exhausted? Those people replied: Please know, Peacock King, that King Brahma-datta (Given by Brahma) has ordered and sent us in this way, and we are working hard in this way because we are afraid of losing our lives. The peacock said: I cannot be caught by traps and nets. If King Brahma-datta wants to see me, please clean the city and decorate it with ornaments. Come here on the seventh day with an army of four divisions, and I will go there. After listening to this, those people reported to King Brahma-datta as they had been told, and the king decorated the entire city and went to the south side of the snow mountain with a chariot decorated with seven treasures and an army. The Peacock King, who appeared as gold, sat on the precious chariot. When its voice sounded, the king and the army were very happy and treated it with great respect, and then went to the city of Varanasi (present-day Varanasi, India). When the peacock's voice sounded at the gate of that city, the sound spread throughout the city. All the people living there were very happy and gathered to watch. There, (the king) said to the unparalleled queen: This peacock will come to you by itself. Then (she) was happy and respectful. The king offered flowers and fruits to the Peacock King. At other times, the king was busy with something, who would take care of the peacock?

Thinking that perhaps he could serve the peacock king. Queen Matchless (དཔེ་མེད་མ་) was both wise and of great intelligence, thinking that she would surely be able to do it, (the Buddha) said, "Goddess, serve this peacock king as I have done." She did so, serving with flowers and fruits. Then, after some time, Queen Matchless (དཔེ་མེད་མ་) fell in love with another man, and the appointed time was in the garden where the peacock lived. The peacock taught the Dharma to that man, and the man, out of desire, abandoned his evil deeds and left. The queen thought, "The peacock knows about my actions. This peacock king speaks human language, and if he tells King Brahma-given (རྒྱལ་པོ་ཚངས་བྱིན་), I will surely be killed." Thinking this, she gave the peacock king poisoned food and drink, and the peacock king became even more beautiful and attractive. When the queen became suspicious, the peacock king said, "I know that you have fallen in love with another man, and even if you give me poisoned food, you will not be able to kill me." Queen Matchless (དཔེ་མེད་མ་) vomited blood, became seriously ill, and died, and was reborn in the Hell of Wailing. The peacock king was liberated in peace, returned to his own abode, and taught the Dharma to all beings. The king Brahma-given (ཚངས་པས་བྱིན་) of that time was the disciple Shariputra, and the queen Matchless (དཔེ་མེད་མ་) of that time is now the Brahmin girl Maya." Again, in the past, beyond immeasurable eons, there was a king named Chariot Woman (ཤིང་རྟ་ནི་མོ་), who ruled over eighty-four thousand small kingdoms. Later, he had a son named Wisdom Light (ཤེས་རབ་འོད་), and at that time, the Blessed One was born there. He had an intelligent mind and surpassed others, so he was appointed as the crown prince. Later, when the father king passed away and they were about to hold the enthronement ceremony for the prince, the prince said to the ministers, "I cannot be king. If I inflict punishments such as killing on these unruly beings, I will have faults. If the people of the country can practice the ten virtuous actions, then I will be king." Everyone said, "That's good, you be the witness." So they held the enthronement ceremony for him. He ordered them to practice the ten virtuous actions, and at that time, the demon

The king became jealous and wrote a letter of rebuke to all the small kingdoms, saying, "Even though I have done good deeds in the past, there are no obvious signs, so from now on, practice the ten non-virtues." Everyone disbelieved and reported it to the king. The king was surprised and exclaimed, "I have not written such words, why has it become like this?" The king himself went to see if the people were the same as before. On the road, the demon king made the king hear the voice of a person struggling in pain in a burning fire. The king asked him, "What is your offense?" The man replied, "I used to make these people practice the ten virtues, so now I am very painful." The king said, "If encouraging people to do good deeds will suffer such pain, it is impossible. Did those who you encouraged to do good deeds receive the fruit of happiness?" The man said, "They did receive it, only I who encouraged them to do good deeds became like this." The king was very happy to hear this and said, "If others receive the fruit of goodness, I have no regrets even if I suffer." After saying this, that demon immediately disappeared. The king went to various places, proclaimed the ten virtues to all the people, and praised the merits of doing good deeds, and all the people were devoted to doing good deeds. At that time, the king became a wheel-turning king with the seven treasures such as the golden wheel, and all the four continents were placed in the good Dharma. In this way, he himself abided in the ten virtues and also encouraged others to practice the ten virtues, so now when he becomes a Buddha, there is the sign of a thousand-spoked wheel on the soles of his feet. So it is said. Also, in the past, all the caravan leaders, named Savior and Well-Accomplished, each had a retinue of forty thousand merchants. Well-Accomplished liked to renounce, so he became a monk at the hermitage of a sage, and eventually manifested the Bodhi of a Pratyekabuddha. Those merchants did not see Well-Accomplished and began to search for him, but could not find him. All the caravan leaders said this to Savior, and Savior said, "I will search for him." So he took eighty thousand merchants and searched everywhere, saw that Pratyekabuddha, and said, "Why did you leave the merchants
