Having entered, he became very diligent in meritorious deeds such as generosity and discipline. Furthermore, in a previous life, when the Blessed One himself was born as the son given by Brahma, named Kashi Beautiful, by the power of the wisdom he had cultivated in other lives, even in his youth, he did not crave the objects of desire such as women, and seeing the faults in kingship, he abandoned the duties of the crown prince and lived in the forest, meditating. Once, he arose from meditation and was walking in the garden of the forest when he saw a Kinnara woman with supremely beautiful qualities. That Kinnara woman also saw him and, attracted by his handsome appearance, approached him and said: My friend, a Kinnara woman, whose beauty and youthful virtues make even the gods ashamed, has seen you and is always filled with the pain of love, so she sent me to you, and you should make her happy. The Bodhisattva said: Is that Kinnara woman older or younger than you? The Bodhisattva said: In this way, age changes in an instant, and you are also aging and changing, let alone the Kinnara woman. Listen to me, the body is an impure revolving wheel, and attachment to it causes various kinds of suffering, etc. By showing these reasons, her fire of desire was extinguished, and she began to meditate. The Bodhisattva entered his own hut. In this way, even the extremely beautiful Kinnara woman did not cause his asceticism to be destroyed. Later, when the Blessed One became enlightened, a dancer named Utpala performed dances and songs in front of the Blessed One, and the Teacher, by teaching the Dharma, dispelled her pride in youth and enabled her to attain the fruit of an Arhat. Furthermore, in a previous life, the Blessed One himself was born into a Brahmin family, mastered all the scriptures, was diligent in performing fire offerings and other activities, and was revered by all. Seeing the faults of household life, he went to the forest of asceticism. He treated snakes, pigeons, crows, etc. with the power of loving-kindness.

The deer and its four friends gathered before the sage, sitting like students. Then, the deer said: Great sage, I have not seen suffering greater than fear. The crow said: I have not seen suffering greater than hunger, please tell us a way to be saved from this. The black snake said: The fire of anger burns both oneself and others, what is the way to pacify this? The pigeon said: The suffering caused by the fire of desire cannot be quenched by the moon and cool water, etc., this is great suffering. Please tell us a way to overcome it. To this, the Bodhisattva said: The root of these four sufferings is ignorance. When ignorance ceases, then from actions, etc., all aggregates of suffering will cease. They said: How can this birth, which has the root of suffering, be cut off? He said: If you want peace, you should abandon killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, and lying, etc., and subdue the senses, then you can uproot the tree of birth. To this, everyone said "Well done", and then in their respective abodes, according to the sage's virtuous teachings, they lived with the discipline of not harming sentient beings, etc. After those beings passed away, they obtained human birth and ultimately attained the state of peace. The true words of those who possess discipline and abide in the Dharma are accomplished. In the past, this Bhagavan was skilled in the movement of stars and the calculation of directions, as well as sudden omens and signs, the distinction between seasons and non-seasons, the calculation of the ocean based on the color of fish and water, the differences in land, and the omens of birds and wild animals, and also skilled in the calculation of ocean directions. He was diligent and tireless, slept little, possessed mindfulness and awareness, could endure the suffering of heat and cold, was cautious and steady, and skilled in the methods of drifting and returning ships, enabling the ocean merchants to reach their desired destination. He was born as a person named "One Who Well Takes to the Other Shore", and because of his auspiciousness, accomplishment, and perfection, the merchants greatly respected him, and after praying, they would set sail. Once, merchants from the place of Bhatukaccha...
