Having given the gift of Dharma for four hundred billion years, if there is no hope for even a single word of "you are better than others," what need is there to mention fame and gain? He does not become tired from teaching or listening to the Dharma, and the gods also serve and respect him. The local residents, the retinue of the consorts, and all the friends also renounce and follow him. There, the gods of the Pure Abodes think, "If we serve and respect those who have renounced and followed the Light of Merit, it will be equivalent to making offerings to the Three Jewels," and so they make offerings to them. Even after that Tathagata passed into complete nirvana, the monk Light of Merit also upheld the sacred Dharma for sixty-four billion years. In this way, he made such offerings to ninety-four billion hundred thousand kotis of Buddhas. Thus, Prince Light of Merit is the Buddha Shakyamuni himself, King Full of Light is the Buddha Amitabha, and the city god is the Tathagata Akshobhya. Thus it was said. Prince Light of Merit, aspiring to supreme and perfect enlightenment as a Bodhisattva, should, with heightened intention, completely abandon what is pleasing and displeasing, and should act with mindfulness. Furthermore, in the past, in a dense forest in the land of Kashi (ancient Indian place name), there lived four beings: a partridge, a rabbit, a monkey, and an elephant. They cherished each other, lived in harmony, without disputes, and spent their days happily. Once, they discussed and wanted to know who was the eldest, so that they could serve and respect him. They asked and pointed to a banyan tree there. The partridge said: "Wise ones, how big have you seen this tree before?" The elephant said: "When we were walking on this path, we saw it when it had grown to be about the same size as my body." The monkey said: "When I was walking with my companions, this tree was about the same size as my body." They all said, "Elephant, you are the eldest." The rabbit said: "When I saw this tree grow two leaves, I licked the dew that was attached to them with my tongue." They all said, "You are even older than this." The partridge said: "You

We saw the appearance of a large tree. He said that this tree grew from the seeds I ate and then defecated here. They said, "We are all older than you, so the three of us should serve him, the monkey serves the rabbit and the otter. The rabbit only serves the otter, and the elephant vowed to serve everyone. In this way, they served each other according to their age. Relying on each other, when they went to a steep place, the elephant carried the monkey, the monkey carried the rabbit, and the rabbit carried the otter. They lived in harmony in this way and made vows. Now let's accumulate some other good deeds before we begin. What should we do?" The otter said, "We should abstain from killing." They asked, "What is that?" The otter said, "Grains, fruits, flowers, etc., some have life and some do not, so from now on we should enjoy those without life." After that, by not taking grains, fruits, etc. that have no owner, they abstained from taking what is not given, abstained from sexual misconduct with those with whom it is inappropriate to engage in sexual activity, spoke truthfully after examination and at the appropriate time, thereby abstaining from lying, and the same goes for abstaining from alcohol. Some fruits make one drunk, and some do not, so from now on we should abstain from fruits that make one drunk. When they lived on the basis of the five precepts in this way, the otter said, "If we live on the five precepts, we should also let others live on them." After saying this, the rabbit said to let all the rabbits, the monkey said to let all the monkeys, the elephant said to let all the elephants, tigers, lions, etc. all live on them. The otter said, "All those whom you cannot subdue, those without feet, those with four feet, birds, etc., I will make them all live on the five precepts." In this way, all the sentient beings in the animal realm were made to live on the five precepts, not harming each other, and relying on living consciously in that dense forest, the gods rained at the right time, and the grains, fruits, and flowers all flourished. After the people saw this situation, the king of that place

I say it is the power of ruling the kingdom according to the Dharma. The queen, the young men, the ministers, and the villagers all think it is their own power. When the king thinks that all these thoughts are clinging to their own power, he asks those who look at omens whose power this is, but they do not know. In a garden not far from Varanasi, there is a hermit with five kinds of supernatural powers who is worshiped by all. The king went to that hermit and said: In my country, all living beings know to abide without harming each other, and the gods send down rain in due season, so that the trees and crops flourish. I think this is the power of my ruling the kingdom according to the Dharma, but the queen and the villagers all think it is their own power. Whose power is this? The hermit said: This is not the power of you, the king, nor is it the power of the queen and the young men, but it is the power of the four creatures in your country. The king said: I would like to see them. The hermit said: What is the point of seeing them? Practice what they have rightly taken up and practiced. What is that? It is the five foundations of vows. What is that? It is the teaching of the five vows, such as abstaining from killing. Then the king said: I will take up the five foundations of vows. After practicing in this way, from the queen and the young men to all the villagers, everyone took up the five foundations of vows. When King Brahma-given heard that his retinue had taken up the five foundations of vows, all the petty kings of Kham did the same. Therefore, most of the people of Jambudvipa took up the five foundations of vows. There, the people of Jambudvipa, having died, were born as gods of the Thirty-three. At that time, the lord of the gods, Indra, said to the assembly of gods: With reverence and respect, the foremost burner, abiding in the grove of asceticism, has well taught the pure conduct in each world. Thus it is. When the Blessed One himself became a Bodhisattva, at that time he became the foremost burner. The rabbit was the monk Shariputra, and the monkey was...
