During that time, food and drink were offered. When one becomes known as 'Householder Who Upholds the Vows,' one offers sustenance for twelve years to a thousand Pratyekabuddhas during a time of famine. King Pūrlu's deity spread golden mats for eighty thousand Brahmins for a thousand years, and from golden vessels, he offered great offerings of food that pacified various diseases and were in accordance with their wishes. Furthermore, when he became the ruler of Kosala, he remembered that in the past, as a servant, he had offered a single warm porridge to the fourfold Sangha, and now he had obtained great royal wealth. He then spoke verses such as, 'This is merely a sprout of that past generosity,' and performed great meritorious deeds such as giving. This is described in the thirty-fourth chapter of the Jataka tales. When he became the youth Norzang (Sudhana), for the sake of the Yaksha maiden Yid-phrog-ma (Manohara), he went with great diligence to the abode of the Yaksha king, brought back Yid-phrog-ma, and performed uninterrupted offerings for twelve years. The stories of the Bodhisattva's generosity are immeasurable, but here, only a small portion is mentioned from what is taught in the Sutras. Moreover, in the Sutras, it says: 'In the past, when Bodhisattvas practiced, they had no attachment to their own bodies, let alone wealth. They had no concept of 'This is mine' regarding objects of enjoyment. These things are shared by all sentient beings. Just as I have a share, so do all sentient beings.' They do not think that because they are close to the Dharma of the Buddha, they have a share. Instead, they think that these enjoyments belong to all sentient beings, and they have no share in them. Even if they attain something close to the Dharma of the Buddha, they do not cling to it. They do not completely gather or take it, so they do not accept it. They are devoted to the Dharma of emptiness and the Dharma of peace, but they do not accept the Dharma of things and the Dharma of inherent existence. As it is said. Again, in the past, when a king named Shuddodhana ruled over eighty-four thousand small kingdoms, there was no rain in Jambudvipa (the continent of Jambu), and there was a famine for twelve years, and almost
