Therefore, it becomes merely established by conception. If it is thought not to be so, because the Svatantrika's view accepts that objects are established by their own characteristics, while the Prasangika does not accept that they are established by their own characteristics even in conventional truth, this difference is well known. If it is so, that is also acceptable. When the Svatantrika emphasizes and explains conventional truth, they consider ultimate truth to be merely the emptiness of truth. By acknowledging the key point that conventional truth is established by valid cognition, they establish it in accordance with the definitive understanding of the followers of scripture. When the Prasangika emphasizes and explains the great Madhyamaka that is free from all acknowledgments of conventional truth, they do not wish for things to be established by their own characteristics even in conventional truth, based on the basis of ultimate truth analysis. Instead, they establish all appearances in accordance with the practice of the noble samadhi, which is free from elaboration and without objectification. These reasons, like the instructions of the previous holy ones, have already been slightly explained elsewhere, so I will not elaborate on them here. The distinction between conventional truth and ultimate truth, which is not conventional, is clear in the Svatantrika's treatises and other great Indian treatises. Non-conventional truth, the ultimate truth that is free from all acknowledgments, appears as the object of the noble samadhi. Conventional truth appears as the definitive understanding of the followers of scripture. The former is the object of wisdom, and the latter is the object of consciousness. The Madhyamikas also adopt various different ways of practice according to their own intelligence. In this way, combining these two, conventional truth and the characteristic school, with simultaneous and subsequent [cognition], there is a great key to understanding here. If you understand this, you can also understand the key to whether the clinging to views is correct or not. Je Tsongkhapa also wrote about this method in the notes he gave to Redawa, so please look there. Here, the term "established by its own characteristics" is used in logic to refer to things that are capable of performing a function as their own characteristic. In the Abhidharma and other texts, the nature of what is expressed, such as the heat of fire, is called its own characteristic. The Madhyamikas refer to whatever is the own nature, self, or characteristic of a dharma that can be established through ultimate truth analysis as being established by its own characteristics. There are these three ways of using the term. However, regardless of whether it is established or not, the own characteristic that needs to be examined

Since it is no different from the essence of that dharma, it is consistent. The Svatantrika school asserts that things are established by their own characteristics, but this is merely applying terms to the essence of that dharma in conventional terms. For example, in conventional terms, the fire that performs the function of burning is established as having the characteristics of red flames and heat. Without distinguishing the aspects of sign and signified, it is called its own essence merely from the aspect of its appearance. If sign and signified are distinguished, then the meaning of fire is heat and burning, and there is no other own-characteristic other than that. Therefore, these all come down to one key point, but there is no difference in the things themselves. It is important to understand this. Therefore, even if own-characteristics are not established in ultimate truth, they are established in conventional truth, and these two do not contradict each other. To separate the two truths and say that they exist on one basis is the view of the Svatantrika school. If someone thinks that being established by own-characteristics or being established by its own essence is not merely an imputation by conceptual thought, but refers to things being established by their own essence, and if it is established in this way, then it will definitely become truly established. If, during the investigation of ultimate truth, even a particle of something established from its own side is found, then it will become truly established. However, the Svatantrika school does not accept that things are established from their own side in the face of ultimate truth investigation. If they did, they could not be Madhyamikas, and there would be no path to liberation. In the face of conventional truth investigation, things appear to be established by their own essence, but how could this make things truly established? It must be validly established by conventional valid cognition. If it is not established even in the face of the conventional truth investigator, then it will not be established anywhere. Therefore, any dharma, whether it is its appearing essence, its characteristic, or its unique way of existing, such as the heat of fire and the moisture of water, if it can withstand investigation by ultimate truth investigation, then its essence or own-characteristic will be established in ultimate truth. If it cannot withstand investigation, but its appearance is not deceptive, then that is how it is established in conventional truth. Therefore, after the investigation of ultimate truth has preceded, all dharmas appear to be merely imputed by conceptual thought. Therefore, if one is a Madhyamika, one must repeatedly say that all dharmas are merely imputed. Therefore, this is how the subsequent ascertainment arises for all Madhyamikas regarding conventional dharmas, and it is not the unique way of establishing conventional truth for the Prasangikas.
